About Jordan Mcmahon

I am a junior experimental atomic physicist with expertise in precision sensing and control of ultracold atomic samples. Currently, I work with the Atom Laser Research Group at the Australian National University, where I develop and implement cutting-edge techniques such as vibrationally insensitive dispersive probe imaging and closed-loop feedback control of Bose-Einstein condensates. In vibrationally insensitive dispersive probe imaging, I use phase shifts imparted by atomic samples onto optical fields and Fourier-domain techniques to reconstruct column density without perturbing the sample. This involves optimising signal-to-noise ratios to exceed 1000 and applying non-linear filters to accurately estimate centre-of-mass positions and sample widths down to 1 μm. Utilising moment damping allows for feedback control of Bose-Einstein condensates, I employ field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to adjust optical dipole traps, significantly reducing horizontal variance and phonon occupation. My work includes conducting numerical simulations, experimental design, and data analysis using MATLAB, Mathematica, and LabVIEW, showcasing my computational and analytical skills.
