About Jordan Miner

Hello. My name is Jordan Miner and I am a Ph.D. Biomedical Engineering Candidate at the University of Maine. I graduated from UMaine May 2021 with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and double minors in Electrical Engineering and Bioinstrumentation. My Ph.D. will be focused on breast cancer and understanding the tumor microenvironment. I am not new to the field of disease research. During my undergraduate years, I conducted research with Dr. Karissa Tilbury studying Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in zebrafish test subjects. I have also had the opportunity to participate in two internships: one at IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook, ME and the other at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. At IDEXX I was doing Biochemical research in the Research and Development Department creating a new in-house pet diagnostic test. At NASA, I was creating Python scripts and Excel Macros to generate Word document summaries of survey responses and I created an official NASA tool using Excel to track recommended actions. Through my experiences, I have learned various programming languages such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, C++, ImageJ/FIJI, MathCAD, COMSOL, ANSYS, SOLIDWORKS, and JMP.Outside of my education, I am a third degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate, I am one of the UMaine Club Softball captains, and I am a member of the Biomedical Engineering Club on campus. I love to play intramural sports: volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, basketball, and softball. I am a hard worker, competitive, and will not give up until the job is done. Thank you!

Undergraduate Student Researcher

Orono, Maine

During my undergraduate years, I currently worked under Dr. Karissa Tilbury researching Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) with zebrafish test subjects. My overall objective was to determine which type of exercise a person with DMD should partake in using Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging with a two-photon laser. I was in collaboration with Henry Lab and we emulated the four types of strength training (hypertrophy, endurance, strength, and power) using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES).On October 15, 2019 I traveled to MIT to take part in NESBO (North East Symposium of Biomedical Optics). I created a poster on my research titled “Imaging Zebrafish with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy using Second-Harmonic Generation to Evaluate Myosin Structure.” I was one of the only underclassmen amongst roughly 40 other researchers and I was able to walk away with one of the top two posters! I was awarded a trophy and a large goodie bag of items for my hard work. I have also presented my research at the UMaine Student Symposium in the spring of 2019 and the fall of 2020.

Jan 2018 - May 2021

Private Tutor

I was a private tutor through the TRIO SSS Tutoring Program at the University of Maine in the fall semester of 2019. I was approved to tutor electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, organic and general chemistry, physics, calculus and linear algebra. I helped students improve their skills in a specific course through individualized one-on-one study sessions.

Aug 2019 - Dec 2019

Technical Development Program Evaluator

Greenbelt, Maryland, United States

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as an intern in the Summer and Fall of 2020. I specifically worked as a data analyst for the Engineering and Technology Directorate (ETD) Engineering Technical Development and Training group in the Instrument and Payload Systems Engineering Branch. During my time at NASA, I worked to develop Python scripts to generate Word document summaries of survey responses. Additionally, I used Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Macros to double check the outputs of these Word document summaries. Every intern has one project they must complete each internship period. My project in the Summer of 2020 was centered around creating an Excel VBA Macro to keep track of recommended actions that stem from the survey responses outlined in the Word document summaries. With the help of my mentor, I was able to get the abstract officially approved for internal release at NASA through the Scientific and Technical Information (STI) Program. In the Fall of 2020, while taking a full semester of classes at UMaine, I was able to morph my project from an Excel VBA Macro to an online platform using Django, a web-based framework that uses Python as the main programming language. This project was submitted to NASA as a New Technology Report (NTR).

Jun 2020 - Dec 2020

Research And Development Engineer

Westbrook, Maine

I worked at IDEXX for the Spring of 2020 for a Research and Development Internship. The project I was assigned to was doing biochemical research for a new in-house pet diagnostic test. During my time at IDEXX, I became familiar with how to use pipettes, centrifuges, buffers, the BioCode 2500 analyzer (Multiplex Protein and Nucleic Acid Reader), JMP (a plotting program; mainly used to create detailed scatter plots), Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and MATLAB.
