My 5-year apprenticeship was based in the NPO area (New Product Operations) of Waters Corporation. During my first year I was placed in the packing and panel department. This area is designed to complete the final aspects of build (panelling completed instruments), along with the shipping and dispatch of the products. During the second year of my apprenticeship, I moved into NPO build. This area is where the instrument assemblies are built ready for testing. Typical day to day activities were to ensure all the builds are completed within SAP hours and that all targets are met for instruments such as Xevo, Vion and Synapt. During this time, I was exposed to working on my first project build, the Peregrine. I was tasked to build and modify the instruments according to the deviations and targets set by my manager and the design team. During year 3 and 4, I spent my time within the 'clean room' build. This area is tasked with the intricate build of the internal components for the instruments. Within this area I learnt how to build the internals for instruments such as Xevo and Synapt. This ranged from pusher stacks to reflectrons. During each build there are a fine set of tolerances allowed (20 microns), which had to be kept in order for the internals to correctly function on test. During my final year I was placed between the clean room and systems test. In the clean room I was continuing the same day to day activities and completing targets. During my time on system test I had been learning the basics of mass spectrometry and how to test an instrument ready for the customer. This involved using multiple software to fine tune and run programmes which allowed the instrument to calibrate.

Following on from achieving my Level 3 BTEC, I went back to Trafford College to complete my BTEC Level 4. During this time, I was both.

Btec Level 3 Diploma, Engineering, Distinction* Distinction

During my 2-year period I completed 11 modules in both Maths, Electronics and Engineering Design. Gaining 9 Distinctions and 2 Merit Grades.
