Ford Applications Product Engineer- Student Intern

Auburn Hills, Michigan, Us

Product engineer in the rack based electric power steering (REPS) division for Ford truck and car platform vehicles. Utilized GD&T and tolerance stack-up calculations to analyze and improve components within the REPS assembly, while maintaining responsibility for the following assignments:- Conducted various backdrive frictional tests for patent-pending HERO bearing. Leveraged certain testing variables to expose any frictional correlations between different bearing materials, spring rates and REPS gears. - Assisted in altering DSS (Design Severity and Sensitivity) documents to ensure steady monthly DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) meetings with customer. - Worked collaboratively with engineer in Mexico plant to resolve any potential drawing discrepancies between programs. - Supported the Ford and Nexteer S550 teams by varying digital torque sensor filtering frequencies within REPS gear in attempt to narrow lag between analog and digital sensors to provide optimal driver feedback. - Team Leader for the Intern “EPS Driven” event to design and manufacture a race vehicle “Go Kart” using an Electric Power Steering motor and various scrap components found around the plants.

Research Assistant

University Of Michigan Medical Research Center

Conducted engineering based tests to assist Dr. Savastano in the development of patent-pending “clot-buster” aspiration catheter.- Device consists of a catheter connected to a suction pump and a spinning, vibrating shaft inside. - Allows for continuous vacuuming and the breaking up of blood clots into fragments.- Developed and compared different shaft rotational speed to catheter diameter ratios to determine best orbital frequency that optimizes the clot removal rate (CRR).- Determined associated “transition zone” where shaft rotational speed no longer produces an orbital frequency.

Manufacturing Engineer- Student Intern

Auburn Hills, Michigan, Us

Manufacturing Engineer in driveline operations plant (CV joints, axle bars, spider gear assemblies and halfshafts). Worked in the assembly department updating and improving obsolete equipment/tooling. Responsible for the following specific projects: -Control software update for assembly line rotating torque station. Replaced 1980’s technology with new Promess prosoft/anybus modules. Assisted in Promess and PLC programming and developed an understanding of the complications behind Promess to PLC communication. Used R&R analysis to validate significantly improved reliability with the new software. -Design and manufacture conveyor belt pallet stop to eliminate a health and safety risk at packout station. Developed a design using SOLIDWORKS and converted the model into dimensioned drawings for manufacturing. -Hone Stone Testing for reduced cost and improved throughput of outer races. Conducted several controlled tests to determine lifetime of various stone media. Analyzed spherical form of outer race throughout honing process to ensure product robustness. Proposal to switch hone media to improve stone durability (60% improvement in cycle lifetime) resulting in annual savings of over $74,000. -Design new ball groove classifier table to increase the efficiency of the service part process. Used SOLIDWORKS to design classifier table with multiple sized dials so all service part families can be classified at one station.

Quality Engineer- Student Intern

Auburn Hills, Michigan, Us

Engineering intern in the Quality/Problem Solving department. I received formal training in Fast X and structured problem solving skills. I was involved in three major projects for the summer:-Steering Column plant > Investigate FTQ / scrap problem with the screw retention at the yoke and steering shaft interface. Used structured problem solving tools to identify a cause - faulty y-axis ball screw (too much play) and faulty draw bar (orient tooling) found in feeder machine (Kira). -EPS motor plant > Investigate EPS motor test stand variation and failure rates. Discovered that motors were failing for a high 3rd Ke harmonic value, due to a faulty and inconsistent glue pattern (holds stator in housing). -I was also actively involved in the Intern “EPS Driven” event to design and manufacture a race vehicle (“Go Kart”) using an Electric Power Steering motor and various scrap components found around the site. Our team finished 2nd overall and was recognized for best scrap use and “heroic repair”. These assignments provided me with a great opportunity to gain experience with various manufacturing and fabrication processes including cutting, drilling, tapping and grinding.
