This was the job that made me fall in love with fast-paced environments, high levels of customer interaction and live music! I really enjoyed waitressing and bartending since both are all about building relationships with customers. My favorite part was regularly assisting in the planning, setting up, and running of large events such as reunions and weddings.Over the years I had a variety of responsibilities, including performing opening and closing operations, training new employees, updating our social media sites, collecting cover at the door, and managing the music.(Also, I've never had a better fish fry!)

I was drawn to working at The Nitty Gritty due to their emphasis on teamwork which promotes a collaborative and supportive environment. On Badger game days the entire restaurant would be filled to capacity. In order to be successful I needed to finetune my ability to multitask and think three or four steps ahead. Being someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, these extremely busy days were my favorite. The energy is infectious and it’s a quite a workout! An awesome part about working at Madison’s official Birthday Place was how around 70 birthday celebrants came in a day—and yes, we sang to every one of them (I’d be alright never hearing “Happy Birthday” again).

During my two semesters in Dr. Niedenthal's Emotions Lab, I was a part of the new lab's growth and worked on multiple experiments at different stages of the process. After Dr. Niedenthal published her paper on the negative effects of pacifier use on boy’s emotional growth*, we brainstormed future studies and developed a questionnaire to delve deeper. Our group met every week for a semester. The first part of our session was for study and discussion, while the second featured a guest speaker from a wide range of fields. The topics included skill development, activism, ethics, philosophy, relationships, and leadership. We kept an ongoing journal of our reflections, responses, and questions.After completion, my fellows and I had the incredible opportunity to go on a two week trip to Israel!
