Renewable Power Systems Engineering Intern

Riverside, California, United States

Leading the design of a new mobile grid battery trailer using a 144-cell LiFePo4 battery array rated at 500V that can charge electric vehicles and buildings in emergencies.Created a full-scale 3D CAD model and engineering drawings of the battery trailer and its components to map the locations of the inverter, BMS box, battery shelves, conduit and wiring, cross members, axials, transformer, etc.Developing the thermal management system for the battery trailer utilizing the TCO Ring Connectors that I developed during my Bourns Inc. internship.Produced battery management system wiring schematics for the battery trailer.Designed an anti-tipping bar to prevent shelves from tipping over when the battery trailer is driving on uneven terrain.Create a bill of materials and coordinate with vendors such as Digikey and Grainger to order parts and materials.

Engineering Intern (Product Development)

Riverside, California, United States

I am the Implementor of the invention of the Thermal-Cut off (TCO) Ring Connector. The TCO Ring Connector aims to improve the thermal monitoring of battery arrays using battery management system voltage sensing leads integrated with Bourns Komatsulite thermal cut off devices (TCO) to replace costly thermal monitoring systems. Lithium-ion batteries can be flammable and explosive. Innovating the thermal protection of batteries is extremely important due to the increased use of lithium-ion batteries in EVs, renewable energy, and smart devices.Responsible for the implementation and testing of TCO ring connector prototypes in collaboration with a design team at Komatsulite in Osaka, Japan. In the pictures below, there are two iterations of the TCO ring connector prototypes that I have designed. I was also tasked with developing testing procedures that simulate an overheating battery to check the quality of the prototypes.

Project Engineering Intern

Riverside, California, United States

As the implementor of the Bourns TCO Ring Connector I: Developed 3D CAD models of the TCO ring connectors and ran steady-state and transient thermal simulations in Solidworks.Collaborated with the marketing and legal department at Bourns Inc. to CO-AUTHOR a PATENT for an application of the device and AUTHOR a USER MANUAL for the TCO ring connector device.Fabricated three iterations of prototypes of TCOs integrated into ring connectors to prevent over-temperature of battery cells.Developed experimental methods to simulate an overheating battery to test TCO ring connector prototypes.Observe the behavior of PTC ceramic thermistors' resistance in response to an increase in temperature and plot the experimental temperature vs. resistance curve on a log scale and compare to the theoretical PTC curve.Present to several potential customers and company executives about the TCO Ring Connectors' function, benefits, and uniqueness compared to current solutions.Aiding in the design of a new mobile grid battery trailer using a 144-cell LiFePo4 battery array rated at 500V that can charge and discharge electric vehicles and buildings in emergencies.Developing the thermal management system for the battery trailer utilizing the TCO Ring Connectors.

Unmanned Ground Vehicle Mechanical Design Lead At Ucr Unmanned Aerial Systems

University Of California, Riverside

As the team's UGV Mechanical Design Lead, my role was to manage and facilitate the design and manufacturing of our team's Unmanned Ground Vehicle. The UGV was to be dropped from an unmanned aerial vehicle and make a parachute landing. This process involved the extensive use of Solidworks to model the rover’s geometry and subsequently running Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations of the design. Once the design was completed, my responsibility will shift towards the fabrication and testing of the rover to ensure that it meets the requirements set out by the competition.
