-Legislative Advocacy: Managed the Commission’s legislative agenda, which focused on juvenile justice reform, youth homelessness, health care, and school inclusion. This included analyzing and tracking legislation, developing advocacy strategies, preparing and presenting testimony at legislative hearings, conducting legislative briefings, and working with legislators and staff on legislative drafting. -Administrative Advocacy: Developed policy proposals in partnership with government officials in 18 executive branch entities on issues impacting LGBTQ youth in the areas of housing and homelessness, juvenile justice, the child welfare system, education, health care, and more. -Coalitions: Represented the Commission on numerous advocacy coalitions and co-led a new coalition to advocate for LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system in partnership with juvenile justice and LGBTQ legal organizations. This included commissioning public-facing reports, coordinating legislative advocacy among stakeholders, and executive branch advocacy.-Research: Collaborated with staff to write the Commission’s annual report containing policy recommendations to the legislature, governor, and 18 executive branch entities. This included collaborating with researchers and academics to analyze new data, develop new areas of research, and write smaller reports on specialized topics.Guidance: Provided advice and counsel to the Executive Director and Commission leadership on legislation, administrative policies, and advocacy strategies. Oversaw interns and graduate student fellows.Communications: Interfaced with media outlets as a spokesperson to disseminate and provide commentary on the Commission’s work and write op-eds in support of the Commission’s legislative priorities. -Budget: Secured 60% increase to our annual state budget line-item from the Legislature in 2020, which allowed the Commission to hire additional staff and expand our policy and programmatic work

Proposals included enhanced protection under Servicemembers Civil Relief Act relating to arbitration clauses in contracts; extension of protections against default judgments; and expansion of personal property tax relief. Prepared memorandum regarding gender dysphoria among transgender servicemembers, arguing that gender dysphoria should be classified as a condition that may constitute a separately unfitting condition within the Disability Evaluation System. Such a classification would allow transgender servicemembers to receive benefits if found unfit for service due to severity of gender dysphoria, contrary to current policy.. Drafted Outside Practice of Law request to allow a disability attorney to represent servicemembers appealing Other Than Honorable discharges. The Judge Advocate General subsequently approved request. Conducted research and drafted memos to assist Disability Evaluation System Council attorneys in preparing cases on behalf of servicemembers seeking a higher disability rating.
