About Jordan Schroeder (Rife)
Hello, my name is Jordan Rife. I graduated with my masters in Biomedical Engineering in spring of 2030 from Ohio State University with a focus on product development. I was part of a Medical Device B.S.-M.S. program at OSU where I was paired with SpaceLabs, a client medical device company in Washington, working to develop a telemetry device. Through this program I was able to perform a large variety of tasks at the different stages in product development. Additionally, I worked for a start-up medical device company in Columbus, IR Medtek, developing a skin cancer detection device. I recently accepted my first full time position an a Quality & Systems Engineer at Axogen. In this role, I work along side my colleagues to help ensure the safety and efficacy of nerve graft products for patients suffering from peripheral nerve damage.

Quality Engineer
Biomedical Engineer
Had the opportunity to continue my work for the start-up medical device company after the conclusion of my internship in the summer of 2022.-Completed patent searches to look for conflicting IP-Led a customer discovery initiative to interview relevant stakeholders, such as primary care physicians and dermatologists, to get their views on the device -Helped narrow down a list of target investors for the company to talk to as they enter their next round of funding-Performed miscellaneous market research and competitive analysis tasks as they were assigned
Start-Up Medical Device Intern
Hired as an intern at IR Medtek, a start-up medical device company creating a skin cancer detection device. -Learned about commercialization of a start-up and the key steps to get to market-Performed competitive device searches and analyzed corresponding reimbursement codes to estimate expected reimbursement amount for the company’s business model -Composed an investor list targeting companies in relating industries who may have an interest in investing based off of criteria such as location, typical investment stage, investment history, and recent exits which could indicate an influx of capital-Contributed to the content of the investor presentation the company is using in their pursuit of companies for their next round of funding
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Hired as a graduate teaching assistant for Advanced Biomaterials within Biomedical Engineering curriculum. -Answered student questions to further understanding-Graded assignments and provided constructive criticism to encourage learning for class sizes up to 37 students-Designed exam questions to assess student learning
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Goal of investigation was to quantify magnitude of pericellular matrix (PCM) degradation after degradation with Heparinase III-Performed immunohistochemistry to stain for the HS6ST1 enzyme on degraded and non-degraded groups indicating PCM degradation-Processed images of the slides to quantify staining intensity with ImageJ -Used critical thinking skills to analyze the results and conclude that intensity of staining didn’t have a significant correlation with degradation as expected -Listed as a coauthor the scientific article “Pericellular Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans: Role in Regulating the Biosynthetic Response of Nucleus Pulposus Cells to Osmotic Loading” in the JOR Spine JournalGoal of investigation was to use microfluidic channels to validate a COMSOL model of the experimental setup-Helped develop a highly-detail oriented protocol for making and utilizing microfluidic channels-Conducted experimental runs on the confocal microscope using the microfluidic channels-Analyzed the images taken during each run in ImageJ and extracted quantitative data-Organized and plotted numerous data sets to prove repeatability and validate a COMSOL model of the setup -Demonstrated multi-tasking, organization, and time management skills while balancing course work, lab duties, and compiling results in Excel and Powerpoint for weekly meetings
Teaching Engineering To Kids K-8 (Tek8)
I was selected to take part in the TEK8 program at Ohio State. Through this program I translated what I learned through my time working in one of the research labs into an interactive design challenge. I presented this challenge to groups of underprivileged 6th graders from the Columbus area with the goal of getting them excited about engineering. In my research I learned about how stiffness of the pericellular matrix (PCM) effects cell volume change. The main takeaway from this project that I chose to convey to the students was the stiffer the PCM, the better the cell could maintain it's volume. To display this concept, I used a sponge filled with water to represent a cell. The kids goal was to build a PCM around their cell so when a force is applied the membrane acts as a barrier to keep the water close to the cell. Their design was successful if their PCM was able to contain the water.
