Dr. Steven Johnson's lab studies chromatin architecture in C. elegans. Specifically Dr. Johnson studies nucleosome positioning as a means of manipulating the DNA sequence to regulate gene expression. Ultimately Dr. Johnson's research aims to discover epigenetic mechanisms by which genes can be regulated in order to improve human healthWhile in his lab I was awarded an ORCA grant that enabled me to complete a program written in java that recovers nucleosomes from restriction enzyme digested C. elegans DNA samples. The program is multi-threaded and leverages several third party programs including Bowtie and SAMtools. Manuscript is in prep. While in his lab I also performed histone octamer reconstitutions preparatory to analyzing sequence specific DNA histone interactions. I also assisted in running DNA and Protein gels, extracting and purifying DNA from worms, and other lab assignments.

The Senior Missionary Training Center is responsible for aiding all Senior missionaries preparing to serve missions in foreign countries to learn the language they will be speaking. I taught Thai to many elderly missionary couples who would serve in Thailand and assisted many other couples who would serve in various other countries. They would go on to serve in roles such as welfare, finance, publicity, and many other capacities for the Church in their respective countries. One of the couples I had the opportunity to tutor was President and Sister David Senior. They were called to oversee all church work in Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. I also had the privilege to teach several General Officers of the Mormon church ESL. The department assigned me to oversee and develop a new Thai grammar guide, which upon completion was over 100 pages. I was recruited by the guided language program where I worked with a team of tutors, language specialists, and volunteers to promote more effective language learning. We developed a program that enabled tutors to teach missionaries how to learn language that the tutors themselves did not speak.
