Due to the rand/dollar currency risk, a decision was made to source all aluminium locally and import only a range of products that we were at the time unable to manufacture ourselves. Extensive costing was done and the savings proved attractive enough to warrant the purchase of additional production machinery that would enable the local manufacturing of various other ladder ranges, thereby no longer requiring to import them anymore. Quality was always paramount as was strict adherence to all safety standards and international best practise. The products were being sold through Builders Warehouse, Game, Build It, Jack's Paint and a growing base of independent wholesalers and retailers throughout RSA and some neighbouring countries. I sold my shares and exited the business, as the investment returns did not meet my expectations.

Turned around a failing finance team and managed to produce AFS that were in arrears for 4 years. This was achieved in 18 months. The impact of this was that the company was able to raise much needed finance through increased revolving credit as well as asset and vehicle finance. I was able to guide my team to get back control over the creditor reconciliations and entire processing system, which had resulted in substantial fraud having been committed. Our debtor's book was managed more effectively and we were able to collect all long outstanding debt and bring the book back within its 30 day mandate. As a result of ongoing expenditure controls we were able to reduce the losses and enable the operations to continue as cashflow improved. I was instrumental in setting up our operations in Mozambique and overseeing all legal requirements for the establishment of a legal entity in this country.Through prudent forex management we were able to make substantial foreign exchange profits from our operations in Zambia, which went a long way to improve cashflow in RSA.I was involved in 2 rounds of retrenchments during these difficult years and helped ensure that the process was as humane and fair for all those affected.My team was able to evolve our financial accounting software by installing 2 new software applications as our needs for additional management control features increased. BuildSmart was the final software application that gave management easier control over project costing, project profitability, procurement and accounting data and timely release of credible management reports.Attended to quarterly management reports including cashflow, forecasting, budgeting, human resources and year end reporting to European parent company with strict deadlines.Was involved in strategic planning with the management team as well as execution thereof.
