FounderRedplaneta.Com May 1997 - Jul 2001Shortly after the Internet bandwagon started in Venezuela I founded PlanetaChat.com, a Web community portal targeted at Hispanics that offered Chat, Forums and Postcards services. With lot of hard work during the first year the site became very popular and received people from more than 25 countries around the world. In mid 1998 I decided to change the name to RedPlaneta.com to broad the range of services I could offer, partnering with GoTo.com and SeekAmerica for search services, and Fiera.com and Submarino.com for Shopping. Revenue was generated thanks to advertising partnerships with two top ranked web advertising agencies in the US: ValueClick and Advertising.com. By early 1999 RedPlaneta received more than 400.000 monthly unique users that generated more than 3 million page impressions each month, which positioned it among the most popular Chat and Forums portals in the Hispanic community in the US, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru.In late 1999 I received an acquisition offer for RedPlaneta from a Miami-Florida based company called “PlanetaUno” which offered $120.000 for all of RedPlaneta’s assets (domain names, website and ad contracts). I turned down that offer because my goal was to keep working on growing RedPlaneta and I thought that it was still early in the race to seek and exit strategy.RedPlaneta/PlanetaChat was featured in top worldwide media like Discovery Channel, Internet-World magazine, ElPais and ElMundo from Spain, PC Magazine, iblnews.com and other technology and internet publications and newspapers across spanish-speaking countries. By mid 2001 after the dotcom bubble burst I stopped working actively for the site and only kept it as a hobby until I shut it down in 2011.
