The National Academy of Surgery is the successor to the Royal Academy of Surgery, founded on December 18, 1731, by Georges Mareschal and François de La Peyronie. It has become the leading French institution encompassing surgeons of all specialties. A special group of members of the Academy consists of "Free Members". Free members are personalities from various backgrounds who have significantly contributed to the advancement of surgery, although they are not necessarily practicing surgeons. They can be researchers, scientists, health policy officials, or personalities from the medical world. Free members bring a different and complementary perspective to the National Academy of Surgery. Their role is to enrich the debates, share their knowledge and experiences, and contribute to developing recommendations and policies in the field of surgery. Their expertise allows for the addressing of multidisciplinary issues and the exploration of new scientific and technological advances.
