I have over 15 years experience working with data during a period which has seen massive changes in data driven technology and applications. My work has spanned collecting, extracting, transforming and analysing data to make it informative to relevant business, strategic or research requirements as well as designing and developing databases to improve the efficiency of data storage, management and analysis. I have contributed to several publications including research papers in Requirements Engineering, medical research, drug development and genetics as well as strategic reports used by the UK government and United Nations. I am interested in exploring different ways of using data to address the changing requirements of business and research goals as well as improving workflows to maximise efficiency. Outside work I spend most of my time with family and enjoy football, walking and music.

Senior Data Manager And Data Scientist And Project Coordinator - UclebUniversity College LondonLondon, Gb -
Senior Data Manager / Data Scientist / Project Coordinator - UclebUniversity College London Jan 2011 - PresentLondon, United KingdomBased in the Institute for Health Informatics in London, I manage data used in population genetics projects working alongside clinicians, statisticians, epidemiologists, cardiologists, geneticists and pharmacologists. Our aim is to delineate the role of the genetic determinants of cardiovascular diseases as well as investigating potentially novel therapies using data from the UCLEB consortium which consists of 12 prospective population-based studies pooled from 4 Universities in the UK. These studies have been enriched with large amounts of genomic, proteomic and metabolomic data in over twenty thousand individuals. I am responsible for developing and managing the cross-study database that brings together all this data and ensuring data is ready and available for research. I provide analytical support and have contributed to over several academic papers identifying or replicating new genetic loci from Genome Wide Associations, developing genomic risk prediction algorithms and investigating the causal role of genetic variants in cardiovascular disease traits. As part of this role I manage and coordinate access to data for over 60 sub studies with a range of analysts accessing data on a linux high performance cluster. I also advise on data governance issues ensuring compliance with all new guidelines and provide support for PhD students and post docs. -
Senior Database Developer - Healthy Life ExpectancyUcl Jun 2019 - Apr 2020London, United KingdomBased in Institute of Health Informatics on secondment until November 2019 I am developing a big MySQL database to be used for research into Healthy Life Expectancy. Data is from NHS Digital Hospital Episode Statistics spanning several years and the entire UK population. This is the largest database of its kind and it is anticipated that the resource I am building will be used in several other research projects within public health and health informatics. -
Senior Data Manager - Stress And Health Study (Aka Whitehall Ii)Ucl Dec 2018 - Apr 2020London, United KingdomIn addition to my other roles in UCL I am the Senior Data Manager for the Stress and Health Study (Whitehall II) 0.4FTE where I oversee the running of data sharing, data governance and data collection for phase 13. I liaise with researchers from all around the world to grant access to this very rich data source and ensure that data governance guidelines are adhered to. I oversee collection and processing of data (clinical, questionnaire and linking to Electronic Health Records) from the latest phase of this study which has been running for over 30 years. -
Senior Data ManagerThe Health Foundation Apr 2020 - Jan 2022The Networked Data Lab at the Health Foundation brings together advanced analytical teams in organizations from across the UK to work on shared challenges and to promote the use of analytics to improve health and healthcare. My role is to work collaboratively with colleagues to support this ambitious programme of data analytics, data curation, data standardization, and data linkage. l work with the team to communicate the value of innovative data linkage and analytics to the public and to policymakers; to engage with senior stakeholders on data curation and standardization, as well as helping to develop partnerships with health and care organizations across the UK. I also work with data controllers within local partner organizations to identify legal gateways, maintain data security, manage remote access and to harmonize research datasets. This includes working with the team to describe meta-data and dataset structure, implementing data standards, working with relevant external contacts to negotiate permissions for data use, and drafting data sharing agreements. -
Genetics Data Manager - English Longitudinal Study Of Aging (Elsa) And Whitehall Ii StudyUniversity College London Nov 2009 - Dec 2016London, United KingdomI was the genetics data manager for English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA) and The Stress & Health Study (a.k.a. Whitehall II). For both these studies I have designed data systems which help manage genetic data on thousands of survey participants. I also worked alongside Natcen Social Research and the Whitehall II data management team to manage genetics data sharing applications. -
Database DeveloperUndp Sep 2013 - Dec 2013London, United KingdomAs an independent consultant I developed a data system for collection, storage and analysis of data for a project to analyse how the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) address the Social, Economic and Environmental Determinants (SEEDs) of health. This project involved planning, requirements analysis, designing, developing, testing and implementing a database to be used concurrently by multiple users and to provide training. I also provided analytical support by developing reports, queries and charts which went into the final UNDP report for the project [https://www.instituteofhealthequity.org/projects/addressing-social-economic-and-environmental-determinants-of-health-and-the-health-divide-in-the-context-of-sustainable-human-development/seeds-full-report.pdf]. The database system was implemented on a shared server using Microsoft Access split and configured to allow concurrent access. -
Data AnalystUniversity Of Greenwich Jan 2009 - Nov 2009London, United KingdomI produced various executive reports used by the Heads of schools, programmes coordinators and other senior and executive staff involved in strategic planning at the University and its partner colleges. I used data from university applications, registrations and progress reports as well as student survey data which went to inform departmental as well as institutional decisions. I was also involved with the development of both ad hoc and routine statistical reports to the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), Higher Education Funding councils as well as data used in university league tables by handbook publishers and newspapers. -
Information OfficerPublic Health England 2004 - 2009London, United KingdomI worked as a member of the team responsible for monitoring HIV prevalence in the UK. My area of focus was the CD4 Surveillance Scheme which monitors the immune health of HIV infected adults living in the UK by collecting and analysing data from laboratories that perform CD4 cell counts. My work here spanned data collection, analysis, reporting, and database development. In my time here I helped increase the coverage of the scheme by liaising with representatives of UK NEQAS for leukocyte immuno-phenotyping, authored several annual reports, improved the algorithms for record linkage between reporting systems and as part of MSc Thesis I applied requirements engineering methods to analyse the impact of the evolving requirements of the UK HIV/AIDS Patients database on system wide goals which was published in the Requirements Engineering Journal. I also designed a prototype database for the UK contribution to the European SPREAD project used to monitor HIV drug resistance and a database used by the National AIDS Trust in a survey to monitor commissioning of HIV prevention activities in London
