About Jorge R. Castañeda

Emerging finance leader in Social Responsible Investing. Currently, Jorge is the Interim Supervising Accountant leading the Accounting team at an ESG agency in Santa Barbara County. Jorge has never felt more connected to the environment than he currently does; his work is making a direct impact on ESG issues. The current project is to record AR transactions accurately to extract tonnage waste data. The goal is to divert waste by 60% from reaching the Sant Barbara County landfill. While pursuing a Master of Science in Finance degree, Jorge discovered an interest in data mining and machine learning. Jorge is now growing his experience in programming in Python using machine learning techniques to answer questions related to finance and ESG investing. Being an apprentice in programming, he is currently seeking a position in quantitative finance to build mastery in the intersection of finance, machine learning, and ESG investing. Before graduate school, Jorge was an A.P. Economics and High School Math teacher. He is a long-time advocate for learning by doing. Hence, Jorge incorporated games into his lessons to apply the theory learned into an interactive classroom activity. For example, when teaching monetary policy, he used Chair the Fed game. When teaching about investments, The Stock Market Game provided students immediate results to their choices. Jorge used Kahoot to build competition among the students and Khan Academy to amplify classroom engagement via LearnStorm.During undergrad, Jorge interned for the University of California Santa Barbara, Economic Forecast Project as a Research Analyst and discovered a passion for data analysis. His tasks were to aggregate and clean data. After compiling the data, he would create data visualization figures to help with the interpretation of the data, along with the quantitative written analysis of the data. Before his academic years, Jorge held six years of experience selling Banking, Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate products. Jorge mastered listening to customer needs and matched them to a set of financial products that met the client's financial goal. All in all, Jorge has worked in different environments and has excelled expectations. His ability to build upon past experiences, and learn about any new task at hand, has led him to succeed in distinct environments. Jorge has lived up to his values of learning and building upon his acquired knowledge. Now he is actively seeking a role in quantitative finance/ESG Investing that matches his values and is excited about what he can build next.

Analyzed the financial situation of a private multinational company in the interior manufacturing automotive industry interested in raising capital from investors in exchange for equity in the firm. The task was to calculate a figure for the additional funding, select a target country for further expansion, and compose a list of possible investors. I created an executive-level business presentation with a Valuation Model and recommendation to further expand current operations in China through a Joint Venture (JV) with X-Peng. Consulted the International Deal Pricing and Empowerment team at Microsoft, who were open to exploring solutions to mitigate revenue dilution in LATAM due to currency depreciation. The task was to create a model with optimal parameters to minimize revenue dilution and create local pricing stability with the least amount of pricing updates. Created executive-level business presentation with a foreign exchange pricing model for Argentina, Mexico, and Brazil, recommending semiannual automatic pricing updates using a lagged spot rate. The proposed model was back-tested using the three already mentioned LATAM currencies to a reference model and reduced revenue dilution by 15%, 71%, and 66%, respectively.

Mid-year, the school needed an emergency Math and Economics teacher while prepping for reaccreditation. The task was to build an AP Economics program and create a data library to store qualitative data for the reaccreditation process. I compiled the reaccreditation data by rolling out G-Suite for education to the campus and conducting campus-wide surveys. I recommended for the school to invest in Macro and Micro Economics Student Resource Manuals. The outcome was the renewal of the school’s accreditation and credible resources for the AP program.
