Assistant Professor Clinical Epidemiology

Utrecht Area, Netherlands

Over the last five years, I have consistently contributed to improving methods for diagnostic technology evaluations or diagnostic research, with a focus on dealing with reference standard problems. These innovative methods in particular addressed 1) methods to adjust for bias due to missing reference standard outcomes (or partial verification) in diagnostic accuracy studies 2) methods to adjust for differential verification bias in diagnostic accuracy studies; and 3) methods to assess the added value of new diagnostic technologies or biomarkers. Furthermore, I have supervised (as co-promotor) three successfully completed thesis (“Non-invasive imaging of coronary artery disease and its functional consequences” by dr. Jeroen Schaap, "Improving the methodological framework for diagnostic studies", by dr. Christiana Naaktgeboren and "Diagnostic Research in the absence of a gold standard", by dr. Maarten van Smeden), and currently supervise two more PhD students. The research topics of these PhD students include diagnostic prediction modelling in complex cardiac surgery and combatting the urgent problem of overdiagnosis and overtreatment.Aside from my work as a post-doctoral researcher at the Julius Center, I also work as a epidemiological staff member both for the division of Laboratory, Clinical Chemistry and Hematology and for the “Medisch Ethische Toetsingscommissie” (METC) of the UMC Utrecht. Also, I coordinate and lecture two different courses (i.e. “Advanced Diagnostic Research” and “Prognostic Research”) within the (Prestige) Master Epidemiology at the University of Utrecht. Outside the UMC Utrecht, I am an active member of an international collaboration working on a guideline for reporting diagnostic and prognostic models (TRIPOD) together with key international researchers from eminent institutions (e.g. Oxford, Harvard and Stanford). This collaboration was initiated and is steered by the UMC Utrecht (prof KGM Moons) and Oxford University (prof Altman).

Phd Student Clinical Epidemiology

From 2007 till 2011 I performed my PhD studies as a researcher at both the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht and the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam. During my PhD studies, I also obtained my Master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology at Utrecht University based on my research on Bayesian methods to correct for differential verification bias. Notably, with this research I won the “Professor Frits de Waard Award 2011” for the best and most original epidemiologic research by a student in Biomedical Sciences. During January-August 2009 I worked as a researcher at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University, Montreal (CA), under supervision of Dr. Nandini Dendukuri. This research visit resulted in a key publication that led me to be awarded “Best Junior Researcher 2013” by the Netherlands Epidemiological Society.
