In my position of pre-sales consultant and architect I was asked to join the two top of the bill network and infrastructure architects to form a new department which focusses on (re)designing large systems for internal and external customers. Projects which have a scale from weeks to months of runtime and are part of the key business infrastructure of internal and external customers. Occasionally my work is enriched with pre-sales and design tracks for larger external customers. This includes interacting with customers, sometimes having tech sessions on site of a whole day.Designs still focus on on bigger platforms with many components interacting and the designs focussed on stability, security, redundancy, scalability and performance tuning for a specific application as well as key infrastructure components, as far as they are Linux an Services running on them.Technical designs and advices include: server monitoring redesign, in- and outgoing email, DNS, automatic server deployment, configuration management, managed and shared hosting portfolio redesign, centralised logging and making data sources of systems dynamic and not static.Platforms designed for customers include mission critical designs for pharmacies, health institutions, and large webshops.All designs used multi homed VMware infrastructures.

As a pre-sales consultant I had technical sessions with customers to inventorize their technical. The catch was to get back to what their actual demands are, and not how they see them implemented. I was responsible for creating a technical advice and design which was used as a base and addendum to a commercial proposal. After this a implementation plan was written and part of the deployment was done by operations, and part by myself. The designs focussed on bigger platforms with many components interacting and the designs focussed on stability, security, redundancy, scalability and performance tuning for a specific application.The architect role is partially as a follow up of the pre-sales advice, but also internal systems were redesigned. Firstly I had some 2nd and 3rd line system administration tasks for 50%, but this share quickly became lower.

Designing systems according to internal of customer demands, delegating simpeler tasks in projects in working instructions form and doing complicated ones myself, documenting projects and providing training for the system administration and support departments. Setups are often loadbalanced, replicated, firewalled, failover.Examples are:- a 10000+ mailbox multiserver Zimbra setup, loadbalanced and largely redundant. Mailbox config and content migration from a legacy platform.- Designing, implementing and handing over a new scalable, extendable and modular mail setup for the whole company. Failover, load balancing per element, spam, virus and smart RBL scanning.- Optimizing larger Magento webstore clusters Tuning more complex setups according to customer demands and applications hosted. Diving into the customer application and brainstorming with the customer on these optimizations. A two player game needs good synergy and contact.Keeping an eye on security and advising on it.Doing complex migrations between platforms. Seeing that legacy platforms can contain outdated and or incomplete data. Cleaning up before you migrate or in the migration proces. Conducting load en stress tests on larger mission critical deployments. Being third level escallation in technical and social way regarding customer problems and third line escallation with technical internal issues.Coding smaller and bigger applications in perl, for instance logfile analysers, rsync backup control, mysql backups, various data inventarisation tools, automated migration, automated rollout in cfengine and custom scripting. Working with virtualization and knowing the techniques, especially ESXi and vSphere/vCloud. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of virtualization in implementing internal or customer wishes. Knowing that a MySQL is tuned differently on virtual than on dedicated.Asking the technical questions in numerous (35+ in current job, 40+ in previous job) job interviews.

Examining and resolving outages, handling technical problem tickets, provisioning servers, coding smaller and bigger scripts. All on many different older and newer linux platforms. Linux and some BSD. Doing datacentre work.Doing presales interviews, tagging along sales visits als 'technical expert'. Your average Linux nerd with experience in support, economics, sales and projects.

Senior 2nd line support engineer which started with mainly telephone and mail shifts. Later programming the customer contact registration system, mailarchive and smaller things were added. Made about ten technical courses and teached them too in front of an audience. Took care of creating the support (both internal and external) regarding five product launches.

Ex-owner of this hosting company that tries to offer high quality at relative low prices by attracting customers that need little technical support and allowing these customers to fully manage their services and domain registrations online.My primary concern was building, installing (both software and physical) and administration of sixteen linux servers and a storage server.
