José Eduardo Mateus has been active in Portugal on the creation of new research structures and disciplines after long study stages in France and in the Netherlands. In 1982 he created the Laboratório de Paleoecologia (LP) in the National Museum of Archaeology where he built (in cooperation with Paula Queiroz) the bases for the development of Landscape Palaeoecology, Vegetation History, Palynology and Archaeobotany. Their Laboratory passed through 3 institutional phases, with a first transference to the Natural History Museum (Univ. Lisbon), and a later one to the Portuguese Institute of Archaeology (Ministry of Culture). In the context of the LP the author worked on other research lines, such as Plant Ecology, Geobotany and Plant Taxonomy (via Pollen Morphology) where he took advantage of computer data gathering, treatment, analysis and simulation. Finally in the domains of Virtual Archaeology he started the programme “Heritage Serious Games” involving 3D modelling, animation, interactive real-time rendering, and the creation of game engines in C++ and Direct X.Still in the scope of the LP the author developed international consortia, and formed (in cooperation with Universities) new technicians, specialists, and researchers (at the level of licence, master, and PhD) in disciplines and technologies absent from the curricula of the Portuguese Universities.After around 30 years of existence of the Laboratory of Palaeoecology, JEM took the remaining of his enterprise capacity to found TERRA SCENICA, reformatting the whole scientific programme started in 1882 into the project of the Videogames for Heritage, Science and Art.Apart from his research protagonism JEM, coming from a family with traditions in the “Beaux-Arts”, has privileged Music as Art Expression, being involved in Ancient Music Performance (viola da Gamba, baroque violin, recorder, lute, dulcian, singing)
