José A. Bartolomei Díaz, Ph.D. is an epidemiologist and biostatistician with longstanding experience in designing and developing epidemiological data systems that support the ongoing and systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health-related data essential to planning, implementing, and evaluating public/population health practices. He has contributed to public health and science by developing epidemiological surveillance systems, cross-sectional, and longitudinal epidemiologic studies. In addition, he actively contributed to the COVID-19 pandemic response in Puerto Rico. With his epidemiological and statistical skills, he has designed and conducted several epidemiological studies on cancer, asthma drug utilization, COVID-19, and opioid use. During his career, he has retrieved, managed, and analyzed data from complex sampling surveys, and mortality and claims data from private and governmental health insurance institutions. Dr. Bartolomei is actively involved as a professor for Latin American Public Health Graduate Students in statistical modeling via a collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Through his work, he has designed case definitions, data dictionaries, data collection, and procedures for the aforementioned epidemiological studies. With his expertise, Dr. Bartolomei has implemented advanced statistical methods such as rate standardization, time series smoothing, full Bayes, and empirical Bayes spatial smoothing, generalized linear models, and mixed linear models for longitudinal data. Dr. Bartolomei is also proficient in the R language for statistical computing, LaTeX, and Markdown typesetting languages. Dr. Bartolomei has been the lead designer and programmer of www.matrix2metrics.com, a platform aiming to produce high-quality, up-to-date population-based information using government open-source data sets. Dr. Bartolomei brings entrepreneurial and business acumen as well. In 2013, he founded Outcome Project, which has served public health institutions for 10 years. Since 2019, he has immersed himself in the Puerto Rican entrepreneurial ecosystem, having successfully participated in 7 competitive business incubator and accelerator programs. He has also been a business mentor for young entrepreneurs at some of them.
