Developing a model for generative urban design as part of the City Induction research group composed of 4 researchers: José Pinto Duarte, José Nuno Beirão, Jorge Gil and Nuno Montenegro. City Induction aims at developing a tool to formulate, generate and evaluate urban plans and is composed of 3 complementary models: the formulation model which formulates the prescriptions for an urban programme according to the context data; the generation model that generates designs according to the programme and an evaluation model to guide the formulation towards good performative prescriptions and to guide the generation to match the prescriptions.The generation model is part of a design tool called City Induction.The generation model uses shape grammars (Stiny, 1980) and discursive grammars (Duarte, 2001) to provide the generative tool that generates the designs.The papers written on this subject can be found at CuminCad - http://cumincad.scix.net/cgi-bin/works/Search?search=Beir%e3o&paint=1

In particular, evolutionary characteristics of housing systems seem to be a powerful approach to deal with housing demands in developing countries. Our goal is to help define these systems in collaboration with local prefab construction companies that may be interested in such approaches.My academic research provides me the theorectical support and tools to address these goals in a very efficient way. We can provide millions of alternative solutions just by combining components of housing systems and the customization interface can be provided through applications supported by shape grammars.We have the means to help any prefab construction company to provide high qualitative customizable housing systems.bq website shows the concept of 3 of these systems: the Plugn'Play House, Luang House and the Green Modular House.
