Founder & CeoKnewton Jan 2008 - Dec 2016New York City Metropolitan AreaIn 2008, Jose founded Knewton, effectively launching today’s adaptive learning industry. He coined the term “adaptive learning,” holds several key patents in adaptive learning, and invented and built Knewton’s core product. Knewton uses AI in the form of machine learning to automatically calibrate educational content and then automatically generate proficiency estimates for students for every concept they learn. Knewton combines these proficiency estimates with other factors — such as the date by when students need to learn a given concept, or which media formats (e.g. text, assessment, video, game) are most engaging for each student — and produces a unique instructional playlist for each student each day. Among many other awards, Knewton was named a “World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” by Fast Company and the “World’s Greatest Tutor” by Forbes, and Jose was named a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum and a “100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs” by Goldman Sachs. Jose grew Knewton’s valuation to over $400m by 2015, but, in 2016, Knewton’s board and Jose disagreed on the future direction of the company, and a new CEO was found. In 2019, Knewton was acquired by publishing giant, Wiley, where it continues to help millions of students. -

Led a company-wide effort that developed the modern Kaplan test prep course, and is the only person ever to develop test-taking strategies so effective that ETS was compelled to remove an entire section from one of their exams (and admit it publicly). Wrote Kaplan's GRE Guide (still available in bookstores). Led an effort that forced ETS to pull early computerized tests off the market for a number of months in order to make substantial improvements.
