About Josefine Dunst
I am enthusiastic about all things DNA - Ever since I first learned about nucleic acids, I was intrigued to develop a better understanding of molecular and cellular processes guiding all forms of life. The multitude of tools available to engineer DNA, studying the functional outcome of such manipulations, and applying this knowledge in the development of therapeutic approaches or novel research technologies, are key drivers for me to pursue a career in life sciences. I am a scientist (immunology/molecular biology) with 4 years postdoctoral research experience in T cell biology in general and receptor-ligand interaction in particular. I enjoy research both at the desk and in the lab – delving into the literature and connecting the dots is as exciting as making observations in the lab for the first time. Here, I am keen to identify and apply the most suitable method to solve a problem at hand, and I have successfully adapted a variety of techniques to address novel research questions. Furthermore, I like taking on additional challenges and responsibilities – in my previous roles, I was involved in knowledge transfer by supervising students, including advising on experimental strategies and solving technical problems, as well as in acquiring third-party funding. When not science-ing, I love experimenting with recipes at home. Especially when baking, good protocols are key, and if a recipe is imprecise, I enjoy revising and adding more detailed instructions to share with family and friends. I am grateful for the scientific accomplishments and technical progress made so far that make today’s research possible, and I would like to contribute to the great achievements yet to come, for example by advancing therapeutic approaches or by accelerating research through technical improvements. Skill highlights: molecular biology (cloning, CRISPR) | cellular biology (primary cell isolation and culture, organoids, transfection, hybridoma) | flow cytometry | cell sorting | live imaging | in vivo models

Scientific Advisor
Postdoctoral Scientist
During my postdoc at Karolinska Institute, I studied the development and function of innate-like B and T lymphocytes. Within the scope of my T cell projects, I have mastered and established several methods new to the team, such as the generation of T cell hybridoma that subsequently allowed me to clone paired TCR sequences for further functional characterization in vitro, including screening for ligands of these TCRs. This project allowed me to gain substantial experience in cellular engineering. As the Stockholm team is relatively small, my responsibilities were broad and varied: I developed research programs, I performed data analysis and presented data to collaborators, I led efforts to obtain approval for certain experimental procedures from relevant authorities, and I supervised and trained five Master’s students and one PhD student. Moreover, I have secured funding for my projects amounting to approx. 80,000 Euros.Together, this position allowed me to strengthen my project management skills, especially by overseeing projects end-to-end as well as by distributing tasks to team members.
Postdoctoral Scientist
During my postdoc at the German Rheumatism Research Center, my research focused on the characterization of functional consequences of human TNF knock-in on mouse TNF receptor signaling as part of establishing a pre-clinical in vivo model suitable to study effects of anti-human TNF therapy. In addition, I conducted a collaborative research project with an industry partner. In this project, I was responsible for managing our team’s research budget (e.g. long-term planning of expenses and negotiating prices with suppliers of reagents), for planning and conducting experiments to achieve pre-set milestones on time, for analyzing data and for reporting to our industry partner. Collectively, due to these varied responsibilities, this position allowed me to develop excellent project management skills as well as to gain insights into the development of pre-clinical in vivo models and communication with an industrial partner.
Phd Candidate
During my time as a PhD student, I independently conceptualized research projects and developed suitable experimental strategies to investigate the impact of host-pathogen interactions on inflammation in the context of Plasmodium infection. For instance, I designed multiplex assays such as customized Luminex panels to assess cytokine and chemokine levels in serum isolated from Malaria patients as part of a collaborative effort to understand host immune responses to infections. These projects strengthened my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Moreover, I supervised a Master’s student and taught a practical course in parasitology at Humboldt University Berlin, allowing me to gain experience in the supervision and training of fellow scientists.
Student Research Assistant
As a student research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, I worked closely integrated in a team of researchers. My main responsibility was to generate vectors for a reverse genetic screen of Plasmodium berghei membrane transport proteins, including documenting my research results in a well-structured system. After a short training by my mentor, I planned my experiments independently and I developed excellent organization and time management skills, e.g. by prioritizing urgent and/or time-intensive tasks.
