A video-based surveillance system has been developed to enhance safety in nuclear plants by assessing the radiation dose received by personnel during their activities. Unlike traditional monitoring methods like TLD or pen dosimeters, which are either slow or imprecise, this system employs computer vision methods to detect, track, and identify individuals in real-time. Cameras installed in the Argonauta research reactor provide challenging video data, owing to similarities in clothing colors and the movements of workers.The system amalgamates tracked positions of individuals with radiation dose rate data, calculating the doses each person receives. Identification is achieved using either face/head colors or SURF points, with the latter proving more effective. The accuracy of identification is bolstered by the incorporation of identity history and a post-processing correction stage.Engineered in Matlab and optimized with parallelization to minimize processing time, the system’s accuracy has been validated against manually obtained ground truth, even in occlusion situations. Its efficacy is underscored by outperforming the Führ-Jung method, an advanced technique in existing literature.The system functions as an independent and complementary tool for radiological protection, offering quick and accurate assessments of radiation doses received by workers in nuclear environments. Its practical applicability and efficiency have been confirmed through validation in a research reactor setting. The intricate and varied video data set has been made publicly available to propel ongoing research and development in the field of nuclear safety.
