About Jose Mestre, Lcsw

I am a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker/psychotherapist in private practice and Cofounder/Executive Director of Serving Those Who Serve, a nonprofit founded in 2002 whose mission is offering holistic/integrative health modalities for the 9/11 community, vets, active armed forces personnel, people affected by Hurricane Sandy, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and refugees. I received my B.A. in History and English from Georgetown University and my Master's Degree in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City. I also did two years of postgraduate work at the Ackerman Institute for the Family, which is one of the best-known and most highly regarded training facilities for family and couples therapists in the United States. In addition to working with families I have extensive experience working with individuals, couples, tweens, teens and the elderly using a Supportive Psychotherapy, holistic, and social justice framework, as well as with an ecological, strengths-based, and collaborative approach. I have also been trained in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Motivational Interviewing and Solution-Focused Therapy.I have also studied for many years mindfulness, breathwork and meditation which I teach my clients. Among my many teachers, I have trained in the Breath~Body~Mind Breathwork and Meditation taught all over the world by Integrative Psychiatrist Dr. Richard Brown. I am committed to helping my clients discover that they are capable of growth, that they can find meaning and contentment in their lives, and that they can develop competency in their chosen endeavors. I also work with my clients to help them acquire the resources, tools and coping skills to accomplish these goals as well as build greater self-awareness, self-esteem and self-empowerment. I am also passionate about working with marginalized communities especially the undocumented and people of color.

STWS was founded in 2002 to help people heal from exposure to the hundreds of toxins present at Ground Zero and related sites on September 11th and its aftermath using holistic/integrative healing modalities. STWS has helped over 2700 people affected by 9/11 illnesses heal, including 1200 NYC firefighters. We offer Ayurvedic herbal formulas which gently detoxify the body and build up the immune system, breathwork and meditation workshops, energy healing, yoga, acupuncture and stress management. There are tens of thousands of people sick from the 9/11 toxins and trauma and public health officials say that hundreds of thousands of people are at risk. We have expanded our work to offer our programs to vets and active armed forces personnel, people in the Gulf region whose health has been compromised from exposure to BP oil spill and people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Over 400 vets have gone through our programs as well.
