Josep Garí (Barcelona, 1972) is a political ecologist and a UN professional. He works on international cooperation and diplomacy for rural & territorial sustainability. He has a dual background in sciences and philosophy, with a doctorate from the University of Oxford. His professional journey in the UN has been supplemented with stints in academia and the arts.Josep is senior policy advisor at the Climate Hub of UNDP – the UN agency for global development. He serves on the managing board of UN-REDD, a UN climate partnership that supports countries implement the Paris Agreement through policy innovations and financial instruments for sustainable land & forest management.Josep's career in international cooperation spans two decades and various organisations, including the World Bank, FAO, IADB and UNDP. He has worked in more than 30 countries, mainly in Africa and Latin America, assisting them with policies, legislation, investments and local projects for sustainable rural, territorial & community development. He was UN mission leader for rural recovery in fragile states and humanitarian crises, including Burundi, Colombia, DR Congo, Haiti, Mali, Philippines, and Sierra Leone. He was head of the UNDP Environmental Finance Unit for West & Central Africa, helping establish the first generation of national climate funds across Africa.Josep has also served in global diplomacy for agriculture and the environment. He was a rapporteur in the negotiations for the International Seed Treaty (2001). He was the UN envoy to the Congo forest & climate agreement (2011), later advising the African diplomats on the road to the Paris Agreement (2015). Josep has also served in various international commissions, such as the FAO Subcommittee on Ethics in Food & Agriculture, and the UN panel on human rights & the environment.Josep is Fellow of the World Academy of Art & Science. He occasionally lectures on green diplomacy. He has published a wide range of writing, including academic papers, field manuals and essays. He serves in the editorial board of the UN Society of Writers. He is also an amateur of photography: he has documented rural lifeways across the world, conducting various international exhibitions, from London to Buenos Aires.Josep lives in the forest edges of the Jura mountains, near Geneva, Switzerland, where he enjoys hiking throughout the seasons. His personal passions also include nature trails with the family, playing football in the local veteran league, and tinkering stuff in the home workshop.
