While a membrane intern at Dupont, I conducted many projects to improve product quality and personnel safety.I was tasked with addressing quality issues originating from a supplier, responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scrap. These issues were being exacerbated by electrostatic generation throughout the system. I designed an improved static control system to alert when poor-quality materials were being fed into the system and effectively neutralize any charge contributing to poor product quality on all product lines. I also wrote and in-serviced electrostatic bar cleaning and troubleshooting guides for the system.I was able to contribute to the membrane team through many other meaningful projects. I conducted an FMEA analysis on a polymer mixing transportation system vital to all product lines, identifying over 40 possible failure modes. I developed and implemented a post-hot plate temperature alarm system for over 100 different membrane formulations, each with unique temperature targets and ranges. I also contributed to the redesign of a chemical application system and a caustic delivery system.I was given smaller day-to-day assignments that allowed me to gain vital experience in a 24-hour manufacturing facility.

I assisted a graduate student in a biomolecular research lab. The main task given was to reproduce and modify a ligand from a previously successful trial.This ligand is intended to help with the treatment of a liver-related condition. The previous semester, a ligand was produced to successfully treat it but the in-vivo half-life was too short. After reproducing the ligand, I designed and completed a PEGylation procedure. This addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) was confirmed with MALDI results.In my time in the lab, I gained experience in common biochemistry practices I had not been exposed to in school. These experiences included electrophoresis, MALDI, protein cloning, and purification.

In my first year of employment at 3M, I assisted a team of researchers with sample production and testing. This included the production of hundreds of unique polymer samples. Analysis performed on these samples includes but is not limited to rheology, tensile, adhesion, residual monomer, and size exclusion chromatography analysis. In the second year, I was given the opportunity to start an independent project, an opportunity very rarely given to technical aides. During this time, I formulated and tested over 100 polymer samples. Upon request, I was trained on a pilot-sized reactor within the facility. I became the first person to use this reactor and eventually trained senior researchers to conduct their experiments in the reactor. I moved six of my polymer formulations onto pilot-scale production and presented findings to research and manufacturing teams.I gained invaluable experience in the research and development process.
