    Self Dec 2017 - Present
  • Levine Cancer Institute, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist
Director Of Health Economics & Health Outcomes Research (Heor), Department Of Cancer Biostatistics
Levine Cancer Institute, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Sep 2020 - Aug 2022
Our Team focused on improving the cost-effectiveness and evaluating the positive and supportive impacts on health outcomes of programs, services, and treatments at the Levine Cancer Institute (LCI), a patient-centric cancer research hospital. We conducted robust economic outcome evaluations to inform decisions intended to improve healthcare and to provide support for health outcomes research. Our HEOR Team utilized a variety of approaches to analyze the operational, methodological, and policy challenges which are useful to oncology researchers and clinicians conducting studies and to the various decision-makers assessing costs of implementation. Economic evaluation often involves a comparative analysis of alternative courses of action. At LCI we provide strategic and analytical thought leadership for oncological therapeutics where the health outcomes of patients are evaluated in areas such as Supportive Oncology, Pharmacoeconomics, Financial Toxicity, Outreach Services, and other areas. Our challenge was demonstrating the value of interventions within clinical departments with a focus on outcomes meaningful to payers, clinical decision-makers, patients, and fiscal/business decision-makers at LCI. The environment our Team operated in faced many emerging challenges in the healthcare/ health insurance industry, such as: the increasing costs of pharmaceutical drugs, the applications of new technologies to treatment, which equates to increasing costs for patients, the impacts of social determinants of health (SDoH) and their impact on health disparities and health outcomes, and how all of these dynamics increasingly impact financial distress and toxicity of patients. Any organizational project that deals with economics, also deals with politics, and that was an aspect we always had to navigate. While these challenges are all very daunting, our Team strove to make a difference for patients and improve their health care trajectories and health care outcomes.

This approach was designed to build an integrated, collaborative team with subject matter experts, to develop. design. and implement best evidence-based practice interventions and achieve improved health outcomes. Our team leveraged innovative problem-solving to achieve value-based, effective care for our members, while trying to control overall costs. Some of our tasks were to: collaboratively develop risk-stratification modelling to be able to predict health outcomes and to be able to triage cost-effective intervention efforts; create real-world evidence-based outcomes value-tracking for the purpose of having a standardized metric to answer the question-‘What outcome are we getting, for what we are spending?’; identifying key strategic partnerships and acting as a bridge between groups for real world data sets; developing real world evidence disease-based data-buckets to assist the development of needed products and to assist sales of medical and pharmaceutical benefits offerings; tracking specific specialty drugs and their outcomes – to derive overall value; investigating industry need and utilization (valuation) of the Organization’s real world data; and deriving new metrics and assisting in the implementation and evaluation of a more cost-effective Pharmaceutical Care Management intervention. The environment our team operated in faced many emerging challenges in the healthcare/health insurance industry, such as: the increasing costs of pharmaceutical drugs, the constant application of new technologies to treatment, and a complex interplay between Big Data, Data Science, and Analytics for every facet of the clinical/operational realm. Ultimately, the goal was to remain member/patient-centric in a system driven by large-scale forces.
