About Joseph Biel

I love finding answers in data. And turning that into actions. While I worked as different managers at store level in the apparel industry, I used data and reporting to make my decisions as a manager in the store. I gain recognition and promotion because of how well I understood how to use past information to forecast what was next at my location. After my second in a row company announce their stores are closing, I decided to go back to a career path I abandoned in college, but I felt was meant to be on. I am using online courses to gain the hard skills of the analytics industry to match the soft skillset I already have. This transition has been challenging, but I am determined this is what I am meant to do.

    I was the first recruited for this new store. I helped from day one to recruit and set up the store. I used my experience with this company in the past and my knowledge of shoes and the shoe business to help coach the team. We had a record setting grand opening, not even tarnish by the more recent grand opening of the new flagship store. We blew away goals in our first year, and are continuing double digits above goal this year. I am the assistant in the store but I am viewed as the individual to come to for information and guidance. I know how to get the best out of my team, to get their strengths to cover my weaknesses and vice versa.

    The Izod store I work at is a $3 million store. With one of the smallest sales floor spaces for our division we finish in the top 3 IZOD stores year after year. With the size of the store and the volume we do, my store is so far outside of the corporate visual plans we constantly make changes to the flow. And that is where my strengths come in. In the weeks between floorset updates we sometimes have moved every item in the store. Keeping the feel of the store IZOD but making it work for my customers, where our store's Men's and Women's department penetration is flipped from the division average. I review our department numbers daily and try to improve where I can if I see a downward trend in my numbers. There are 15 associates that I directly supervise on the sales floor and backroom. Also at this store customer service is amplified with our demographic. I also monitor sales and payroll daily. I am competitive, even with myself, so not beating last years numbers I take personally. Training my team on new product features and company policies is essential my making my store the best not just in the top 3.

    The Izod store I work at is a $3 million store. Making it in the top 2 year after year in sales volume and traffic. We might be the largest sales volume and move through the most inventory, but our small is half the sizes as the other busiest stores. Compared to an average store me are missing an entire 8 foot wall and our last wall is 2 feet shorter. It makes it a nightmare to keep merchandised and set up the floor that our district manager doesn't like dealing with. But that is my job. I make store based merchandising decisions daily. Allocating what goes to our offsite, how much of a new product we keep on-site back room, and sales floor space dedication to top sellers, that I have to determine. I have taken on these responsibilities as well as the ones that are my job description. I am still on the sales floor during business hours, multitasking with our shipment of 200-600 boxes. There are 15 associates that I directly supervise on the sales floor and backroom. Also at this store customer service is amplified with our demographic, so there is not slacking on that. Training my associates on new product features and company policies is one of my favorite things to do.
