Engaged with the Early Careers Scheme to learn more about Systems Engineering in industry across the entire product lifecycle, including Requirements Engineering, Systems Architecting and Design, Testing & Evaluation, Acceptance Engineering, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), and Availability, Reliability & Maintenance (AR&M)Within my core role, I applied my knowledge predominantly on the left hand side of the engineering V-model in contexts such as:• Bid support, technical delivery planning, technical delivery leading, and report authorship within the Helicopters portfolio;• Telecommunication product development for the ESA Lunar Pathfinder and LCNS Moonlight programmes;• Major programme bid support for Aviation Mission Rehearsal;• Technical delivery planning within the Future Combat Air Systems (FCAS) division.I embraced the opportunities and flexibility that Early Careers offered by:• Engaging with the formal learning courses, including optional pilot courses• Jointly founding the “Early Careers Voice”, a group of community members who seek to amplify the voice of the EC community, and feedback concerns, ideas, and views to the Early Careers team;• Joining the ADS New Professionals Forum committee, wherein I produced distributible “Introduction to Space” materials in support of a Retention campaign, and supported the organisation of the popular Neurodiversity in the Workplace event;• Learning more about my own working style through psychometric profiling and implementing improvements into my working habits and relationships;• Becoming a STEM Ambassador to give back and to support underrepresented demographics who are interested in STEM• Becoming a mentor with the Social Mobility Foundation to provide support to those who, like me, come from underprivileged backgrounds and are seeking Higher Education opportunities.All the while exceeding my delivery expectations and hitting the “Role Model” behaviour mark in my annual performance reviews.

Role split between desk work and site workDesk work comprised the production of documents detailing the combustion specifications, glass residence times, and gas purge times for bespoke glass conditioning systems (forehearths). I was also involved in the procurement and quality assurance of the support steelwork and control system. Where required, I was also involved in the system design and production of assembly layout drawings.My duties on-site were to supervise the mechanical and electrical installation of the equipment to PSR standards, to calibrate the combustion systems throughout their entire operational range, and to ensure the safe and controlled warm-up of the equipment up to operating temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius.

My main role as a project engineer was the fulfillment of contractual agreements to supply and install cremators and ancillary products (e.g. flue gas treatment systems, loaders, ash processing equipment etc.) from the project planning stage, through to contract handover to the customer service team. As the project engineer, I was the central point of liaison for the client, suppliers, site workers and factory staff.To complete the projects, my roles included the following:• Procurement of component parts and services.• Maintaining and regularly reviewing a working budget.• Developing a programme of works and ensuring client satisfaction of timescales.• Providing a healthy, safe and co-operative place of work for all sub-contractors on-site.• Resourcing manpower and logistics to balance client requirements with availability of resources• Ensuring compliance with relevant regulations pertaining to the design and installation of the equipment.• Resolution of disputes, queries and concerns pertaining to the delivery of the project.Strong problem solving skills, and a solid background surrounding structural engineering, CDM regulations, electrical engineering, fluid mechanics, and product knowledge were required on a day-to-day basis. These skills aimed to anticipate site-specific problems before they arise although they were often tested to reactively manage installation issues effectively.
