Designed and executed molecular-dynamics simulations to study solidification mechanisms of dense granular polymer systems and fibrous materials. Results will lead to robust metamaterials / composites with tunable energy storage and dissipation properties [Dietz, Hoy, Soft Matter, 2020].Created a novel algorithm that combines core-softened Lennard-Jones (LJ) interactions with chain-topology switching moves to equilibrate well-entangled polymer melts faster than previous methods [Dietz, Hoy, J. Chem. Phys., 2022].Working with my advisor and Professor Martin Kröger (ETH Zurich) to refine and extend a newly-developed analytic model for describing entanglement and probing into the previously unexplored intermediate-chain-stiffness regime [3]. Successfully demonstrated that our refined analytic expressions can capture universal trends in experimental data for a wide range of polymer melt systems of varying chemistry (i.e., commodity plastics, conjugated polymer systems, and F-actin solutions) [Dietz, Kröger, Hoy, Macromolecules, 2022]Created an analytic model that describes the fracture mechanisms and craze features of semiflexible polymer glasses, including those composed of newly synthesized conjugated polymers. MD Simulation results show that these glasses do form stable craze and are perhaps less brittle than previously thought [Dietz, Nan, Hoy, Physical Review Letters, 2022].

Worked together with an interdisciplinary team of scientist to perform a feasibility study and a statisticalcomparison between simulation and experimental data.Designed and executed programs in MATLAB that would perform statisticalanalysis on large sets of ocean-wave data and quantified seasonal variability inwave-energy output across coastal JapanAssisted in large-scale wave-tank experiments, where we attached sensors to anapparatus and monitored the propagation of generated waves.
