Information Technology Professional Iii
CurrentI work as a Db2 database administrator for LUW and a Linux administration to control, monitor, and mold our database environments. I provide scripted solutions for database maintenance and build automation. I create scripts for end-user setup, to assist in quickly building needed connection and environment parameters. I currently build and deploy new environments using bash scripting with a goal of migrating to Python. As I am standing up our new Linux environment, I am incorporating High Availability Disaster Recovery (HADR) with Tivoli System Automation (TSA), to ensure high availability of our most important environments. As new learning opportunities come from expanding our infrastructure with new tools, I am documenting the steps to setup, troubleshoot, and maintain these environments. I have also been training co-workers on these new technologies and the impact they have on managing our systems.I manage our databases by accessing the servers directly, behind PAM authentication, and using Toad for Db2 LUW for direct SQL execution. I built scripts to display quick database and instance status and I am continually looking for ways to improve them as we identify key metrics within our database. I setup a remote monitoring solution, using IBM’s Data Management Console which is attached to a historical reporting database for further analysis as needed. My current goal is to learn enough Python, Ansible, and Jenkins, to allow our group to take advantage of automation for various tasks, such as: Db2 upgrades, DDL and DML script runs, and nightly and weekly maintenance on the databases. The idea is to have a centralized location to manage and log our automated systems, which will allow our group to be caught up quickly from scheduled nightly tasks. I am an IDUG member, and I use that membership to better research globally used best practices for Db2 database management and to stay current with topics and developments impacting administration of our databases.
Information Systems Technician Ii
I respond to about 1,400 potential customers across about 30 locations. I provide tier 1 and 2 troubleshooting on anything and everything which effects our customers, the employees of the City of Reno. I work with Windows 7, 10, Server 2003, 2008, and 2012, Microsoft Office, Google Email, Adobe professional products, AutoCAD, Tiburon, and various web based software solutions for the police and fire departments. I also work on customer and internal documentation on everything from application usage for customers to full computer deployment for fellow technicians.I migrated our shop from a Dell Kace system to an Acronis imaging solution. When upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 we realized a one to one imaging solution wasn't going to work. I built a Windows Deployment Server with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and a Windows System Update Service server to automate computer creation and deployment. Since this project started I have learned about building in system security through the imaging process. We now order computers direct from our supplier with my images on them, saving us an average of four hours per computer deployment.I am rebuilding our Active Directory structure and Group Policy to meet the needs of a workforce of computers which is steadily becoming all Windows 10 machines. I will be incorporating controls for Windows quality and feature updates.
It & Business Analyst
While working at Brookfield School, I have the opportunity to step into more business roles, while still providing technology support for both staff and students.I attended safety classes focusing on written workplace safety, hazardous communication, bloodborne pathogens, and documentation standards. With this knowledge, I rebuilt the school's emergency plans, safety information, and documentation. I provide yearly and ongoing safety training for the employees.I learned about school testing standards and implementation. I migrated our school to newer online testing programs, which include performance assessments and progress monitoring. I provide staff and customer (students' parents) education on the test, reports, and interpretation. I expanded my Excel and Google Spreadsheet skills by creating student population tracking sheets, budget calculators, and inventory tracking sheets. I build population trackers for each new school year and for the summer camps. I create new budget calculations every year during the summer, based on enrollment numbers, to provide guidance to the administration.I use my technology skills, while supporting the staff and student body. I maintain a Windows 2008 R2 server, providing file shares to students, teachers, and administration, DNS, a firewall and OpenDNS filtering service, and Active Directory support. I maintain wireless services with a UniFi solution from Ubiquiti. I support our VoIP phones. I provide assistance with anything from school computers to personal devices. A majority of our computers are Windows XP, however our newer machines are Windows 8. In 2014 I setup an 18 computer lab for student use. At first I set it up with Deep Freeze, a system restore software to lock down the machines. However, after discussions with the student body and teachers, I migrated to individual user logins for students, coupled with end user training.
Operations Technician 1
I worked as a nighttime technician, responsible for all incoming communications, network monitoring, and contacting appropriate vendors or staff in the event of a major incident. Due to my work hours I also worked with our European offices remotely. I focused on incident management and access rights management.I supported Windows XP/7, Windows 2008 R2, Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, thin-client terminals, terminal servers, Access databases, and other handheld devices and peripherals. I monitored the nightly and weekly backups on both tape drives and on a SAN. This included monitoring jobs on an AS400 system to ensure that they processed before the tape drive backups started. I directly trained one new staff member and assisted in training a second new staff member. I evaluated new employees on their ability to work and respond to incidents and major incidents as a solo operator. I initiated a documentation overhaul during a conversion from Lotus Notes to SharePoint. I constructed the documentation template and built some documentation samples. These documents became the guidance for both Operations and the Customer Service Center's end-user and IT support documentation.
Desktop Support Technician
I provided direct customer support for the primary office in Boise and 5 remote locations in Idaho. I also provided phone support to field officials. I supported Windows XP, iPads, an OSX server, and all peripherals.I migrated accounts from an Exchange Server 2003 to 2007. I rebuilt local asset accounts, such as conference rooms and vehicles, to ensure the correct groups could reserve them during the correct times. I trained regular users and power users on the new features. I provided advanced training to office assistants who managed multiple calendars for the commissioners. The largest project I built was the executive mobility project. I worked with our new IT Director to create a solution for our busy executives, who had to meet appointments in various locations. They needed mobile access to all the tax law and documentation. We decided to move them to iPads with cellular network capabilities. I setup an OSX server to provide an initial profiles for each of the iPads and to push new applications to them. I built profiles for our executives to enforce password requirements, provide security, and provide remote wiping capabilities for both the IT staff and the executives.
