My first opportunity to work with Joseph was as a classmate at the Penn Coding Bootcamp. Being randomly assigned to the same team for a highly important project on a short timeline, I had a perfect opportunity to get a feel for how he performs in a new and high-pressure environment. To put it simply, he was very impressive. With any obstacle we encountered, no matter the difficulty nor how dire the situation seemed with the deadline fast-approaching, Joseph was always calm, cool, and collected.This demeanor was crucial in a dev environment, as he rallied the team to methodically (rather than frantically) pour over thousands of lines of code to identify and rectify errors. Additionally, he was always respectful, cooperative, and gave / received feedback exceptionally well as our diverse team worked towards, and later achieved, great success. I happened to have an open position on my team during this time that Joseph expressed interest in applying for. In my experience, I’ve found the classroom and real-world work environments to be vastly different, with the latter being a bit more demanding and unpredictable. Therefore, despite the great initial impression he left on me, I put him through the rigorous hiring process with no preferential treatment. Once again, Joseph was outstanding. The highlight of his performance was fully programming an ancient piece of hardware with nothing other than a six hundred page technical manual and a very uncharitable ticking clock. Needless to say I hired him, and that last performance demonstrated a key skill that he constantly manifested throughout his time under my management. I am specifically speaking of his phenomenal aptitude for prioritization. When something is important, Joseph would handle it promptly. This initially may not seem like a huge deal, but it actually comes with an immense amount of benefits. Operationally speaking, we would use an iterative process that allows you to implement a “good enough” solution quickly, and adapt over time based on what you’ve learned. The data showed that it helped us operate with much more agility, and it would take less resources to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction. Joseph’s keen eye for improvement and his incredible efficiency were exemplary in succeeding with this methodology. The aforementioned approach can free up a lot of flex time as well, which allows you to work on other projects concurrently and multitask more effectively.
