The Policy Directorate at the BMA influences key stakeholders to make changes to policy that are beneficial for doctors and patients. My team was within this directorate, specialising on NHS policy, including winter pressures, integration, primary/secondary care interface, privatisation and Brexit. I specialized in using data for advocacy, leading on NHS pressures and providing research support across the team.

Working in one of Wellcome's priority areas. The vaccines priority area works to achieve:- a new, coordinated and systematic approach to developing and using vaccines during the next epidemic, - vaccine design and development to be informed by a better understanding of the people they’re intended to help industry and policymakers to have the evidence they need to decide which vaccines to develop and use,- countries to have the information and expertise to make sure the people who need it most are protected through immunisation.In my role, I work to ensure that the latest research is effectively translated into policy and practice. This is done through targeted projects as well as encouraging systemic change in the relationship between researchers and policy makers.

Working under a new 'Innovation for Impact' strategy, I work across 3 teams within Innovations:1. Science, Innovation and Translation:- Expansion of translational partnerships to European Institutions. Research to identify strategically important institutions for potential partnerships.- Involved in shortlisting of funding applications and responding to queries from applicants.- Managed funding award to major UK university including dealing with IP and budget issues.- Involved in establishing a collaboration with two other major funders to establish training and mentoring for biomedical entrepreneurs in India.2. Planning, Delivery and Analysis:- Analysis of data set to ensure shape of portfolio (focus, risk, outputs) is in line with stated strategy and on track to achieve outcomes.- Work with in-house data analysis team to ensure best possible visualisation of portfolio of investments to facilitate better decision-making.- Establish methods for recording and monitoring impact of investments on global health (e.g. lives saved, lives improved).- Research to find external data sources to help with impact and see global portfolio of investment to identify important gaps that Wellcome could fill.3. Psychosis Flagship:- Establishing 5 year strategy for a programme of work that will improve patient outcomes in psychosis, by establishing novel therapeutics, improving diagnosis, and improving access to existing treatments.- Identified and conducted interviews with world leading experts in the field for advice and input into strategy.

Working to advance the quality of education through developing the research base and empowering teachers with existing research.-Project managed two large events bringing together researchers, practitioners, teachers, and others interested to work on how to improve science teaching and retain science teachers.- Communications for Wellcome funded projects aimed at bringing evidence about learning from neuroscience and psychology to teachers. This included direct communications through blog articles and twitter as well as work with partners to reach wider networks.- Support around grant funding round in collaboration with the Education Endowment Foundation.- Presented work on Wellcome work experience programme in all staff meeting (300+ people).

Charity working with former members of ultra-religious communities who have little or no experience of formal education or formal qualifications

- Tutoring GCSE maths to year 11 students at risk of failing.- Weekly sessions at school with 2/3 students.- Students worked with achieved passes (levels 4 or 5).

- Ran committee meetings with students, staff, and academics.- Voting member of College Council taking wide range of decisions including on education, rents, admissions, and investments (including multi million pound infrastructure investment). This role also gave an important platform to represent students and raise issues affecting students to the college leadership.- Establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with senior members of staff.- Organising open meetings for all students.
