Our first project was with the International Museum of Photography in Rochester, New York and their first disc, To Search for Treasure. While exploiting the capabilities of the laserdisc I began working with post production facilities in New York. I learned enough there to start my second calling, bringing organization to the cachous of production standards. I joined and later became the chair of the SMPTE T14.28 Working Group on Professional and Studio Monitors. This lead JKP to bring out a laserdisc called A Video Standard in January 1989. It used video to describe how video worked. There has been lots of consulting work in between video projects. I entered the picture in January 1973 at the time electronic news gathering (ENG) was just getting started. Prior to that time in TV it had been news at 6:00, film at 11:00. I worked in the Research Labs on the ideas and in the pre-product development labs making the first functional products. Prior to that time in TV it had been news at 6:00, film at 11:00. Eastman Kodak’s first reaction was to figure out how to make film look good on TV. I worked in the Research Labs on the ideas and in the pre-product development labs making the first functional products. During this time the company brought out the film video player using a flying spot scanner. It was designed to play Super 8 films on your TV set. There was even a small library of films that could be purchased for the player. The project was the beginning of the Rank-Cintel Telecine. At the same time we were looking at electronic imaging using CCD devices. The CCD line array became the foundation of the Spirit Datacine, while the x by y array became the foundation of most electronic cameras we use today. In about 1976 we had a CCD imager that would shoot 2,000 pictures per second. It was the forerunner to the Phantom camera. We had an optical recording project using component video as a signal source. It was essentially the beginning of the DVD that came out 18 years later, but it also lead to my helping to bring wide bandwidth composite video to laserdisc. Show less
