The facilities department maintains several historic buildings, and telescope domes.Along with the active research facilities on the campus, there are numerous housing units for employees.Critical infrastructure to support research includes a 2400 volt electrical distribution system, with emergency backup generator. Two mountain springs along with all equipment provide clean drinking water throughout the facility. Sewage waste is taken care of via several self-contained septic systems. Approximately 10 miles of forestry roads and fire breaks provide some wildfire mitigation.My responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Increase, and maintain reliability of all critical infrastructure systems.Maintain maintenance records, and parts inventory for critical equipmentSchedule daily meetings with my staffEnsure employee safety, and trainingSchedule maintenance personnelCoordinate with contractorsInspect buildings, and employee housing units; plan, schedule maintenance as neededCoordinate with campus engineers, and architects.Plan, coordinate, procure materials and tools for special projectsEnsure safety of the Lick Observatory community:Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with numerous outside agencies, including but not limited to County, and state officials such as the sheriff’s department, CalFire, CalTrans, and Office of Emergency Management.First aid CPR certifiedDisaster preparedness, and recovery:Set up a programs to maintain defensive spaces around buildings and critical infrastructureMaintain fire roads and fire breaksWork with CalFire, FEMA, OEM to assess, plan and coordinate disaster relief and recovery efforts.
