About Joseph Maxwell
Immunologist and drug discovery scientist with 22 years of experience in inflammation research and cellular and mucosal biology. I enjoy the challenge of drug discovery and have initiated multiple early discovery research programs relevant to arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, fibrotic disease, and cancer. I have the most experience advancing protein and antibody therapeutics, but have initiated small molecule and microbiome programs as well. These efforts have involved extensive in vitro and in vivo assay development and laying out clear plans for project progression and go/no-go decisions. More recently, my focus has been in translational research and biomarker leadership for clinical and early discovery programs. My key disease area of expertise is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). I have defined a strategic vision for IBD research at two companies, initiated and enabled studies into multiple drug targets, and have identified and initiated various external collaborations to enable success in this disease area. I am a firm believer in using human genetic, functional, and clinical data to help define the most impactful targets for next generation IBD therapies. My current focus is in the celiac disease space where I am supporting two clinical programs and leading efforts to clarify use and implementation of histological endpoints in this indication.I have many years of experience in developing and troubleshooting in vivo models to study cell biology and immunology questions, as well as inflammatory disease. I do believe that in vivo studies can be useful, informative, and predictive, if used appropriately, and I am constantly looking for ways to improve my confidence in such models. Overall, I am a highly productive scientist with extensive leadership and management experience who enjoys the camaraderie within industry and the promise and challenge of finding safe and effective new drugs.
