I remember my first interview for a paralegal position at a Manhattan immigration firm. I'd just graduated from a liberal arts college in CA and moved to NYC. I bought my first suit from Zara and some black leather dress shoes. The day of the interview, as I was about to enter the law firm's building on Park Avenue, I was in bad shape. I had blisters on my heels from my new shoes, I was sweating in the hot summer sun, and my mind was full of self-doubt about whether I was qualified. I walked in and took the elevator up. At least there was air-conditioning. I interviewed with a senior partner. We obviously didn't talk about my (nonexistent) immigration experience.We talked about my studies and customer-facing work experience in restaurants. The partner had a master's degree in philology (study of language). I had studied Latin and Greek (yep, super useful). We spoke about an obscure book called the Loom of Language, a history and guide to learning languages. At the end of the interview, he offered me the immigration paralegal job.This interview sparked my first interest in the hiring process at immigration firms.What makes a good interview? What questions tell us the most about the candidate? How do we determine if the candidate is a good fit?Eventually, when I transitioned into HR at another immigration law firm, these were some of the questions I asked. Years later, I still revisit these questions as I review best practices, research, and data about the interview and hiring process.As recruiter now, what do I do differently?My background in immigration law helps me evaluate candidates. 📦 AFFORDABLE RECRUITMENT PACKAGES - One size doesn't fit all. I offer recruitment packages tailored to the specific needs of immigration firms. 🫰FLAT FEES - The contingent pricing model used by traditional legal recruiters is broken. Most small immigration law firms CANNOT pay 20%-30% of the candidate's first year salary (anywhere from 15k to 50k on average). We use flat fee billing, just like most immigration firms do.🖥️ DATA DRIVEN - The hiring and interview process can feel subjective (see my first interview).
