Joseph Mercurio served as Executive Vice President of Boston University, the fourth largest independent university in the nation with an enrollment of approximately 29,000 students. He began his association with Boston University as a student, graduating cum laude with a degree in Business Administration. In August of 1973, he joined the University as Associate Budget Director. Mr. Mercurio was named Executive Vice President in January of 1995. His responsibilities included the direction of all non-academic programs and service and support activities of the University, as well as the University’s planning, business functions and various commercial activities the University is associated with. Mr. Mercurio has presided over and given direction to the planning and development of new facilities for academic, research, housing, recreational and commercial use, with a value of over $2 billion during his tenure. Mr. Mercurio pioneered the concept of net cash-positive auxiliary operations now widely emulated throughout higher education, taking BU from annual losses to a portfolio of auxiliary activities producing over $55 million annually.
