I worked as part of a small team with the responsibility of planning and programming transmission system affecting outages. In this role I liaised with the system operator National Grid, SPT operations and scheduling to ensure outages are effective, efficient and optimal to minimise outage times whilst getting the most productivity during the outage. My role involves being a good communicator, well organised and focused on each task at hand. I was also responsible for delivering the outages on the day by working my shifts on the transmission control desk which involves me bringing forward experience from a previous role and applying it in a different setting enhancing my skill set. In addition to this I ensured that all data for transmission planning and real time outages is correctly input to produce accurate weekly reporting for the before, during, and after outages leading to improved customer service expectations.

In my role as Technical Craftsperson I have strived to gain as much technical and practical skills and experience as I can. I am authorised at 11kV for switching. I am also a Senior Authorised Person with the ability to issue and receive safety documents. My role comprises of High Voltage Switchgear maintenance, fault switching and restoration which I carry out in an efficient and timely manner, with a constant focus on health and safety. I undertake stand-by duties ranging from a single premise no supply to restoring supplies to thousands of customers and then assisting engineers with High Voltage fault location, repair and restoration. From day to day I still retain my core electrical fitting skills, maintaining a variety of switchgear and other items of plant and apparatus.

In this role I furthered my skills and knowledge and experience in installing, repairing and maintaining electrical plant apparatus such as electrical switches, isolators, circuit breakers and transformers in substations ranging from LV up to and including 33kv, including oil, gas and vacuum. I frequently carried out preventative maintenance, switching operations and post fault maintenance. I can confidently inspect, test and diagnose faults within the LV network, and find suitable solutions to resolve faults found. I have worked on assembling and removing components, adjusting and configuring mechanisms and electrical systems such as tripping and closing circuits coils and wiring.

Working as part of a small team I enjoyed the variety of challenges and opportunities to learn new skills on a daily basis. This role involved training to install, repair and maintain High Voltage plant and apparatus. I learned how to achieve quality work and how safety and high standards must always be met within the company. Working alongside a qualified fitter provided me with invaluable technical and practical skills to progress through my apprenticeship.
