A communication professor at SUNY Delhi, Dr. Piasek is a media practitioner-educator with experience in content development, production, marketing, live media, sound design, consumer research, children’s TV, and organizational learning. A writer-producer, strategic consultant, studio manager, voice director-performer, Joe was a prominent “voice” of Nickelodeon for 20 years, and on the team that established "The First Kids Network." During his tenure, “Nick” became the top rated network in the U.S. Joe produced the first on-air/online social network simulcasts (Nick/AOL), the first “broadcast” voicemail (AT&T), the first daily space news (World Space Report-VOA,) founded the first full power educational (NCE) radio station in Delaware County, NY (WIOX), and collaborated on the first communication degree program (B.S. in Applied Communication) at SUNY Delhi. A proponent of media’s role in shaping thinking and action, Joe has published several essays including those in The New York Times, Encyclopedia of Radio, Dao of Communication, and Gannett. An occasional NCA and NAB/BEA contributor, Joe contrasts industry interests with those of a participatory audience, explores creative uses of big data, and positions radio as social media. Dr. Piasek began his on-air career as "Joe from Chicago" at a variety of stations, including WPLR New Haven, WCOZ Boston, WPIX New York, Sirius/XM. Some of his exploits are chronicled in Howard Stern: King of All Media (Colford, 1996) and Stealing All Transmissions (Doane, 2015). Joe's career in academia began at Quinnipiac as its communications program was being conceptualized, teaching radio production, children's media, audio design, and the first course that explored the Internet. A member of New York University's professional studies faculty, Joe's courses centered on the entertainment industries. At SUNY Delhi since 2010, Dr. Piasek developed/teaches a variety of communication courses, and built/manages the school's A/V facility where live broadcast/streaming of faculty and student programs originates. Recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, Professor Piasek earned a Ph.D. in Education-Media Specialization (WU), M.A. in Communication (FU), B.A. in History (QU), and holds post-graduate diplomas in Media Literacy (NYU) and Popular Culture (MIT). Joe’s inspired learning with Henry Jenkins, Neil Postman, Anthony Chan, George Gerbner, Grace Levine, Benno Schmidt, Stanley Fish, Gerry Laybourne, Fred Seibert, his growing family(!), and others continues to inform each day.
