My academic training is in geology, specifically metamorphic petrology and and high-temperature geochemistry. My studies and research included training in thermodynamic modeling, mineralogy and crystal chemistry, structural geology, and application of several microanalytical devices, including the scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe analyzer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and X-ray diffractometer. I also taught for 10-plus years at the university level, and designed both introductory and upper-level geology courses in both lecture and lecture+laboratory format. For the past 15 years, I have been a materials analyst for the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory site), applying scanning electron microscopy imaging along with X-ray spectral element analysis, electron back-scatter diffraction, and X-ray diffraction to various alloys and ceramics to help understand and improve in-service performance of these materials.Recently, I have become involved in efforts across my Department to facilitate implementation, track metrics for, and share successful examples of SIM (simplify-innovate-modernize) initiatives.
