My career encompassed 38 years in the animal health industry commencing with Sales Positions in the late 60’s until 1980 when I created the first company along with 3 shareholders. From then company building became my passion and all aspects of business were handled on a one on one basis culminating in a major French animal health company purchasing a majority shareholding in Techvet Laboratories. This then became Virbac New Zealand and I remained as Managing Directors of this company until the end of 2006. At that point Virbac NZ had 35 full-time employees and 24 part time merchandisers servicing the Vet, pet and supermarket channels.From Virbac it was a logical transition to Ensid - a company that was created by NIWA and RCM to develop an RFID tag for tagging marine species that NIWA were assembling population numbers and Fisheries data for the NZ Fish industry. The requirement was for a plastic tag rather that existing glass varieties which could not handle the pressure at depths that fish such as Blue Fin Tuna operate at. This project was successful and resulted in a polymeric tag being launched in 2005 in the research sector. The transition to RCM product development has resulted in an RFID linen tag designed for the hospitality industry which is enormous and because of the share size of the market an international distribution agreement has been negotiated with HID Global which is a company owned by Assa Abloy which is the largest security supplier to the hospitality industry.This is good commercial decision and will result in the company remaining in a strong financial position during the growth of this business but as the distributor is handling both manufacturing and marketing it requires little input from the directors.
