Worked on optimizing the production of biodiesel from restaurant’s used cooking oil. I constructed a reactor and refining system that is powered by renewable biomass energy. I successfully produced over 250 gallons of experimental biodiesel using off-grid renewable energy sources to power and heat the reactor. I extensively tested this fuel in test engines and vehicles to monitor performance, emissions, and fuel efficiency. Also led a team that scaled-up the production of biodiesel in order to power UC Berkeley campus vehicles with biodiesel produced using over 12,000 gallons of waste cooking oil generated by the university’s dining halls every year. This will ultimately help UC Berkeley in accomplishing its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. Other club projects I led included modifying an alcohol distiller to recover methanol from reacted biodiesel and glycerol byproduct, completing the plumbing and heating system for an additional parallel and continuous flow biodiesel reactor, and finally, constructing a combined water-washing and forced-air drying apparatus as part of the refining process in biodiesel production.

Current projects include several urban and semi-urban growing spaces where I am developing strategies and models for home gardeners, businesses, and small-scale farmers to be able to grow sustainably in a closed-loop regenerative system yielding maximum plant nutrition, soil health, and water efficiency.

Worked as a paid intern in an internationally-recognized biomedical engineering lab, the Center for Implantable Devices, which specializes in inventing implants and devices to cure/prevent diseases and ailments such as glaucoma and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). The only high school student in the country selected for this internship. Responsibilities included designing and fabricating components for the implantable devices, working alongside a team of engineers, and scientists, in addition to graduate and doctoral students.
