Profile bio

About Joseph Barber

I bring my experience as a scientist, an animal behaviourist, an animal welfare researcher, an author, a career advisor, a teacher, a team leader, and an innovator to the work that I do. I thrive in environments where I can use my imagination and communication skills to help people appreciate the importance of behaviour (our own, and that of other humans and animals around us) on our personal and professional lives and the lives of those around us. I am fascinated by the subject of animal welfare, and enjoy the multiple disciplines involved in this field. I have experience in farm and zoo welfare research, and in the development of welfare programs, policy, and academic courses. I have a background in chickens – perhaps one of the most important elements of my professional identity you should know about. At every step along my career path, I have found that there’s never a bad time to use a good chicken example to make the point you want to make – chickens are highly adaptable like that.I bring creativity to every one of my diverse projects, whether advising graduate students/postdocs on their career development, developing ideas for mobile apps, or teaching and mentoring students/alumni by providing them with subject expertise and the ability to discuss complex, real-world topics objectively and from diverse perspectives.I enjoy the idea of personal and product branding, and I want to be a better marketer of ideas. I am interested in hearing people talk enthusiastically about their research, and I am good at helping them to ask and answer meaningful questions so that they can craft relevant talking points about their skills and accomplishments.I always want to try something new, and bring plenty of experience collaborating with faculty, scientists, administrators, project managers, and professionals from multiple career fields to develop effective goals and new ways of sharing information.

Listed skills include Research, Teaching, Higher Education, Science, and 15 others.

Director Of Graduate Career Initiatives

Current

Philadelphia, Pa, Us

I have really enjoyed exploring how this new position in our office can help us scale our work to support a greater number of students and postdocs. In support of the 2 teams of advisors that work with graduate students, I have integrated professional development into our schedules to support our own growth. I’ll always greenlight trying something new, adding a new approach, or trying a new technology in our work. The world of work keeps changing – we need to as well! Ask me about our Career Champions initiative and how I am co-leading this to build a career community across campus, and don't forget to explore some of our recorded workshops on the Penn Career Services YouTube channel. Do you have animal behaviour questions? I’ll answer some of those for you as we chat about the topic of careers. Every day there seems to be a new opportunity to integrate new AI tools into our work. I am always eager to leverage new tools, but it is also satisfying to help others understand how to use them effectively to support their unique lived experiences and perspectives.

Feb 2022 - Present

Senior Associate Director

Philadelphia, Pa, Us

It was exciting to lead the team of advisors who support graduate students and postdocs in 9 of Penn’s 12 schools. With well over 81 academic disciplines covered by the 8000 or so graduate students and postdocs we served, we became great at learning about new fields and industries quickly and seamlessly. I prioritized online content that students and postdocs could access at any time even before the pandemic, as this ensured we could always provide our resource whenever or wherever students/postdocs needed them.It was really engaging to work with the administrative coordinators who supported our team. They were often professionals looking to grow and develop skills as part of their early-stage career development. They always taught us a lot through their experiences, and it is very satisfying to see them succeed in their career next steps. • Led a team of 3 career advisors in developing career resources for 7000 graduate students and postdocs.• Created online modules for "Job Search Series" and "Academic Job Search Series" for 24/7 access.• Recruited over 60 employers annually for STEM and Tech Career Fairs, building strong relationships.• Served as Chair for Career Competencies sub-committee to produce web content for all student populations.

I’ll always be an animal behaviourist at heart – and animal welfare is such an engaging subject to teach. We cover a lot of topics in this Master’s level course, and students walk away sharing that they enjoy the process of challenging their assumptions and seeing (or perceiving) the world from multiple perspectives. Animal welfare is never black or white, and it is the enormous grey area in our understanding and implementation of welfare principles that I enjoy the most. • Developed and implemented innovative online teaching approaches for Applied Animal Behaviour course• Managed all course elements on Blackboard, including recorded presentations and online discussion forums• Oversaw a semester-long student video project to enhance learning outcomes
