About Joe Camp

Joseph Camp is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He joined the SMU faculty in 2009 after receiving his Ph.D. in ECE from Rice University. He received an M.S. at Rice and B.S. with honors from the UT-Austin, both in ECE. His research interests are wireless systems, drone communications, and blockchain network effects, specifically building real systems at-scale and analyzing the performance within representative environments. His research team has performed over 250 million in-field wireless measurements around the world via Android deployment and local characterization via campus buses, vehicles, and buildings. He was the Chief Network Architect for the Technology For All (TFA) Network, a mesh deployment in Houston, TX which serves 4,000 users in an under-resourced community. He received the Ralph Budd Award for the best engineering thesis at Rice University (2010), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2012), the Golden Mustang Teaching Award (2014), and the Gerald J. Ford Research Fellowship (2021).Specialties: Wireless Networking, At-Scale Urban Experimentation, Embedded Systems, Computer Hardware Design

  • Technology For All
    Chief Network Architect
Technology For All Jun 2004 - Jun 2009
Deployed and managed a wireless mesh network in the low-income neighborhood of Pecan Park (East End of Houston). Collaborated with individuals from Methodist Hospital, Houston Public Library, Houston Community College, Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), and Houston Independent School District. Other responsibilities include operations, inventory, and ordering as well as marketing the network to neighborhood residents.
  • Rice University
    Ph.D. Candidate
    Rice University Aug 2003 - Jun 2009
In my research, I have designed both large-scale network architectures and clean-slate designs to evaluate the performance of novel and existing protocols using urban experimentation. My work has exposed performance issues of at-scale urban wireless networks which starkly contrast assumptions made in both existing analytical models and simulation, motivating my design of models which incorporate such effects. Further, I leveraged these findings to drive clean-slate and cross-layer protocols on the WARP platform specifically in the areas of flexible MAC protocol design and modulation rate adaptation.
  • Intel
    Co-Op/Hardware Design Engineer
    Intel Jan 2000 - Aug 2003
Used Specman Elite to validate Verilog of pre-silicon Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card. Produced regression suite to validate Verilog of pre-silicon bridge chip across multiple PCI bus types. Responsible for building RTL associated with both projects.
  • Nasa
    Sharp Student/Pre-Co-Op
    Nasa May 1997 - Aug 1999
Programmed in 4th Dimension database environment, Multilinx, to build an operational database containing the internal systems of the X-38 Emergency Crew Return Vehicle. Produced a mathematical correlation of an infrared lamp experiment in a vacuum chamber using a UNIX application for the TransHab, an inflatable inhabitant module for the International Space Station. Created a FORTRAN simulation to emulate the reception of an antenna set to travel on the International Space Station from the TDRS (Tracking Data Relay Satellite).
