Joe Carney has spent over 45 years in the reinsurance industry building underwriting teams and managing large reinsurance portfolios. Mr. Carney formed JEC Consultants in 2002 through which he provides his knowledge of the customs and practices of the reinsurance industry to ceding companies, reinsurers and law firms engaged in dispute matters. He is a past member of ARIAS-US and has served as an arbitrator, umpire or expert and fact witness in over two dozen disputes. His consulting efforts include underwriting consultation to a Cayman Captive writing reinsurance program business in the US.Prior to forming JEC Consultants, Mr. Carney was the Chief Casualty Underwriting Officer over Treaty and Facultative operations at Gerling Global Reinsurance. Earlier in his career, Mr. Carney worked in the reinsurance accounting and marketing areas before taking a casualty underwriting position with Prudential Reinsurance in 1974. In 1980, Mr. Carney joined North American Re (Swiss Re) as its Casualty Treaty Manager, becoming its Chief Casualty Underwriting Officer in 1985 and having responsibility for the underwriting profitability of three underwriting divisions in the treaty and facultative area. In 1987, Mr. Carney joined North Star Reinsurance Corporation as its Casualty Treaty Manager, becoming its Chief Underwriting Officer in 1991 where he managed three underwriting divisions made up of five multi-line teams of treaty underwriters. Mr. Carney also had responsibility for North Star’s retrocession purchases as well. While at North Star, Mr. Carney attended the Kellogg School’s Advanced Executive Program where he learned to blend and balance his technical skills with a focused marketing approach.When North Star was sold in 1993, Mr. Carney joined Folksamerica Reinsurance as its Casualty Manager. Mr. Carney has spent his entire career in the reinsurance industry and is well versed in its customs and practices.
