Following on from my previous COVID-19 experience I was able to get a role as a Senior Scientist at the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory, the UK's Flagship COVID-19 testing laboratory. During it's operation it processed over 8 million tests. During my time at this lab I managed a large team of scientists to ensure high throughput of samples and high standard of work to ensure we maintained compliance with ISO15189. Below are a list of my key skills and experience gained from this role:Managed and motivated a large team to ensure they worked to a high standard, maintained quality and met KPIs. Used problem solving skills to design, implement and manage a rota system to make sure tasks were prioritised and delegated with maximum efficiency.Communicated effectively and adapted to maintain throughput required by downstream processing allowing us to set the lab record of 75k results released in one day.Provided on the job mentoring to new starters to ensure they quickly got up to speed on how to manage the lab efficiently.Oversaw lab operations in order to maintain a high standard of record keeping and quality of work in compliance with ISO15189 standards.Managed biosafety of my team in the lab and ensured everyone worked to the standard operating procedure.

During my time at Merck I worked with a team providing custom sequence oligonucleotides to clients from across the world. Problem solving skills and attention to detail were critical when working with micro-scale amounts of expensive reagents. Aside from these I also had to have an in depth knowledge of the LIMS and QMS systems used to track orders and ensure their quality. Below are the key skills and knowledge I gained from this role:Gained overview of the processes involved in the synthesis of custom oligonucleotides.Received training in the operation of HPLC for synthesis, purification and analysis.Quickly built an understanding of LIMS and QMS in place to manage complex systems and processes.

I was among the first cohort of staff hired to start up and maintain the Charnwood Lighthouse Lab at the end of 2020. This was part of the UK's expanding network to provide testing in order to reduce COVID-19 transmission. I worked in the high throughput lab at the height of the Delta Variant and gained valuable skills in how to work in a high pressure and constantly changing environment. Below are the key skills and experience I gained:Thrived under pressure in a fast paced work environment. Achieved by optimising workflow to ensure quality, repeatable results whilst also maintaining a high throughput.Received additional training in respect to maintaining and troubleshooting issues with lab machinery. This allowed for effective lab operations in the absence of engineers.Took on extra responsibility liaising between teams to ensure a smooth flow of samples through the system, this helped improve both communication and problem solving skills.Trained and mentored new starters to help them understand the processes involved and how to work to a high standard.
