Institute for Regenerative Design & Innovation (“IRDI”) is presently in the development phase of becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit. Our vision is to activate the entire sustainable agriculture supply-chain through regenerative design with the end goal of engaging local, regional and global stakeholders in developing a Living-Lab Platform model we call Health Innovation Districts. We believe that communities throughout the southeast will make the choice to develop Health Innovation Districts and retain the investment within local economies, creating good paying jobs and increasing the local tax base. Amizade volunteers travel to the rural community of Williamson, West Virginia. While this area of the country is best known for the Appalachian Trail, outdoor sports, and inspiring natural beauty, Williamson is known locally as a “typical southern coalfield town” and not a tourist hot spot. Located in the heart of Appalachia on the border of West Virginia and Kentucky, Williamson has a population of around 3,500. Coal has been the central pillar of the local economy, with approximately 40% of jobs in the region directly linked to the industry. Williamson is a safe community that allows volunteers to see and experience an authentic Appalachian culture.As a community partners board member, Mr. Mathis provides strategic insight in expanding the Sustainable Williamson platform throughout central Appalachia with a specific focus on implementation of regenerative approaches to mine-site reclamation.

Bio-Regen Innovations (“Bio-Regen”) is a Chapter 54 Cooperative Association, has a vision to develop and activate the industrial hemp supply chain from seed to end-customer through regenerative design and innovation with the end goal of engaging local, regional and global stakeholders in implementing the initial framework for a robust production and use environment of innovative crops in North Carolina. Diverse participation in the development of innovative agriculture markets will stimulate vital economic growth and improve social conditions including health, wealth, and wellbeing across North Carolina. Leveraging the opportunities within the emerging regenerative sector, our cooperative model is designed to identify synergies across the agricultural sector in order to accelerate profitable opportunities within the emerging bio-regional economy in the southeast.

Development of a statewide cooperative ecosystem through the strategic implementation of Cooperation Multipliers (e.g., Cooperation Winston Salem) that are designed to accelerate cooperative enterprises and community innovation that ensure strong rural-urban linkages. This initiative is a part of Community Food Strategies (CFS), a project of CEFS that works to empower local food councils with knowledge and organizational capacity to positively impact their community’s local food and farm economy. CFS are intentionally a multi-organizational initiative to reflect it's collaborative approach and the wealth in partnerships.

Williamson Health & Wellness Center is dedicated to building a culture of health through holistic community and clinical interventions in order to stimulate a thriving local economy centered around wellness for the entire population.

Informed by the successes of Sustainable Williamson, Mr. Mathis provides strategic insight to fellow committee members and the Institute as a whole.

As an appointed board member of the Williamson Redevelopment Authority, Mr. Mathis has collaboratively helped initiate a number of projects for Sustainable Williamson.

Mr. Mathis facilitated the development and expansion of health and wellness programs by ensuring strong linkages with all projects of Sustainable Williamson. The Mingo County Diabetes Coalition (MCDC) was formed in July of 2011. MCDC is a part of the South Eastern Diabetes Initiative (SEDI) research group funded by Duke University. MCDC's primary focus is preventing and managing type 2 diabetes along with the promotion of healthy eating practices, exercise, and healthy lifestyle changes.The diabetes coalition employs three Health and Wellness promoters to plan and execute several events/programs throughout the year as well as a clinical team to raise awareness in the community for a more healthy lifestyle in Williamson WV.
