Joseph J. Adams is a Director of Engineering at Webster Combustion. He possess expertise in chemical engineering, heat transfer, cfd, thermodynamics, combustion and 20 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "As an intern at Reaction Engineering, Joseph was a great resource to our group. I knew I could give him difficult tasks, which normally would require a full-time engineer, and still get great results. He is a hard worker with a great attitude.", "Joseph is a dedicated professional, easy to work with, self motivated, and very productive. He set up advanced diagnostic tools to help us track tracer particles in a fluidized bed. He demonstrated the technique with continuously flowing particles. He conducted detailed heat transfer analysis and identified novel ways to accomplish thje heat transfer using heat pipes with azeotropes. His knowledge is deep and well rounded for his years and what he doesn't know he will do research and find out. Great guy to work with.", and "To Whom It May Concern: I am a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Utah, where I have been teaching for 20 years. Joseph Adams was a student in the graduate course on chemical engineering thermodynamics that I taught fall semester, 2008. His performance in this course was outstanding, ranking 3rd out of 17 students in a very competitive. My impression is that Joseph is very bright, hard working and meticulous and I expect him to be a highly successful engineer. Combustion Engineer/Chief Engineer Of Residential BurnersR.W. Beckett Corporation Oct 2020 - Jan 2024North Ridgeville, Oh, UsResearch and develop new power burners for oil and gas applications. This includes using such tools as Ansys Fluent, Chemkin, and other in house proprietary codes that I developed. In addition, I am the chief engineer for residential burners. -
Burner Design And Development EngineerFaber Burner Company May 2012 - Oct 2020Burner Design and Development: Developed 10 novel burner designs to lower NOX emissions. Created a burner that could reach sub 30 ppm NOX without flue gas recirculation (FGR) and sub 15 ppm with FGR.The burner produced lower emissions, required less time and materials to fabricate and is flexibleenough to fit a variety of boiler and process burner applications. Developed a windbox baffling system to get uniform air flow to the combustion zone which resulted in a 15% drop in NO. Responsible fordeveloping new burner concepts, developing CFD models, then performing physical test on full scaletesting furnace. Commercialized new burner technologies to the different burner lines. Supported salesin providing technical expertise in fitting the correct burner for the needed application. Worked on sitewith customers to resolve technical issues in the commissioning of the burner.CFD: Performed air flow, multiphase flow and combustion CFD modeling using Ansys Fluent. Wrote user defined functions (UDF) to incorporate testing data into the model. Validated both air flow andcombustion simulations with scaled and full scale tests. Windbox baffles and burner fuel injector tipswere first modeled with CFD then tested experimentally to validate the model predictions. Used CFDmodels in product development to reduce the number of physical tests needed to be performed.Developed a Cantera idealized reactor network code designed to incorporate data from the CFDsimulations and produce NOX predictions using the full GRI reaction mechanism. Was able to accurately scale up a burner and predict the NOX emissions using this in house code with CFD results.

Graduate StudentUniversity Of Utah Aug 2007 - Apr 2012Salt Lake City, Utah, UsPrincipal investigator in designing and fabricating a reactor to test the functionality of oxygen transport membranes (OTM) in a gasification environment. Accomplishments:1. Designed and fabricated complex furnace for testing OTM tubes.2. GPA of 3.76 in graduate course work.3. Developed a novel approach to gasify coal without fludizing or entraining the coal. 4. Hired, trained and managed 2 undergraduate research assistants5. Awarded John Zink Scholarship6. Attended John Zink Burner School7. Awarded Kingston Scholarship -
Co-Chair For Student Portion Of National Aiche ConferenceUniversity Of Utah Sep 2006 - Nov 2007Salt Lake City, Utah, UsWorked jointly with Executive Committee Chair from BYU to organize and oversee the student portion of the 2007 AIChE National Conference in Salt Lake City. This conference included a Saturday night bash, ChemE car competition, student workshops, local tours, and gifts for the students. All of these activities were a success and fit within their allocated budget. Individual responsibilities included organizing and correlating the activities of the four University of Utah committees, organizing and overseeing 30+ volunteers, and acting as a liaison between University of Utah and national AIChE representatives. -
InternNational Energy Technology Laboratory May 2010 - Aug 2010Washington, Dc, UsContributed in the development of a carbon capture unit (C2U). Developed and carried out experiments using an innovative magnetic particle tracking systems to measure solids flux in the C2U.Developed Process States diagram and descriptions for the C2U. This outlines the experimental goals and potential hazards associated with this project. Also contributed in performing calculations for adding a heat exchanger to this unit. Presented a novel approach for integrating a heat pipe to the C2U. Presented the findings of my calculations in an internal merit review. -
InternReaction Engineering International Apr 2007 - Aug 2007Midvale, Utah, UsProjects:Future Gen: contributed in incorpirating proprietary model code from REI into a proposed IGCC Aspen flow sheet. Models included an Air Separation Unit and Acid Gas Removal System. Aided in the testing and implementing of models developed in C++ to interface with the Apecs framework developed by Fluent to allow models developed in C++ to work within an Aspen flowsheet. Blast Studio: Ran simulations with the CFD code MPMICE to simulate the effect a land mine would have on a vehicle. Investigated the use of Design of Experiments to reduce the amount of runs required of MPMICE. Investigated Single Value Decomposition to reduce the order of the results from MPMICE to create a data set that could be used to extrapolate results without having to run the CFD code. -
