The thesis is about optimizing weight of the drill steel support, a component attached in front of Drilling Boom of a Face Drilling Rig. The focus of the thesis was to establish a systematic approach to reduce the weight of the component. Various optimization methods like topology optimization and shape optimization were used to generate an optimal design.

I was part of an R&D department known as URE (Underground Rock Excavation) for 3 months during my summer job term. I worked on the design maintenance and updates on change requests made for various levels of design and product structure. My tasks varied from concept generation of attachments for improving the packaging of hydraulic routing on the machine.
