The thesis is about optimizing weight of the drill steel support, a component attached in front of Drilling Boom of a Face Drilling Rig. The focus of the thesis was to establish a systematic approach to reduce the weight of the component. Various optimization methods like topology optimization and shape optimization were used to generate an optimal design for shredding unwanted weight on the component. A castable design in Austempered Ductile Iron, a high-quality Ductile Iron grade was achieved at the end of the thesis.The overall goal of thesis was to improve the design of the component to have a higher strength to weight ratio. This process can improve the overall weight of the machine since a kilogram saved in the front of the machine will save up to 5 kilograms of total weight on the vehicle. I am planning to achieve a weight reduction of 4kg on this component, which in turn can reduce 20kg on the total vehicle weight.Optimization techniques: Topology Optimization, Shape optimizationTools used: Altair Inspire, Optistruct, Hyper Mesh, Ansys Workbench, Creo, Click 2 Cast

I was part of an R&D department known as URE (Underground Rock Excavation) for 3 months during my summer job term. I worked on the design maintenance and updates on change requests made for various levels of design and product structure. My tasks varied from concept generation of attachments for improving the packaging of hydraulic routing on the machine booms to the migration of the grouting tank designs to PorE CAD platform and Teamcenter (PLM). I was also given the responsibility to investigate various change requests and design updates proposed by manufacturing facility. The works were promptly completed and delivered for manufacturing on time with the concurrence of the manufacturing facility.

Underground Drilling RigsNew Product Development of the S2 Drilling Rigs• Onsite project coordinator from Atlas Copco CMTEC, Bangalore.• Responsible for handling the communication and coordination of the project between the design teams in CMTEC Banglore and in Örebro for S2 Drilling Rigs.• Responsible for verifying the designs and drawings carried out in CMTEC and delivering the same to the onsite project team.• Responsible for investigating the Change requests and execute the changes for the S2 machine and related machine variants.• Conducted optimization of various attachments for improved packaging of different subsystems.
