His qualifications in the life sciences include a B.S. in Biochemistry from Mount St. Joseph University and a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology from Purdue University. His Ph.D. research focused on understanding protein folding using the protein, dihydrofolate reductase, and interrogating the structure and function of rare, partially unfolded forms of the protein."

My graduate research has focused on transient partial unfolding of E. Coli dihydrofolate reductase. I characterized global structure and folding of this protein by circular dichroism, ultraviolet, and fluorescence spectroscopies and detected the partially unfolded form of the protein using native-state proteolysis. The structure of the partially unfolded form was probed with several single point mutations. I also identified and investigated product inhibition in the protease, thermolysin, used in the study of partially unfolded dihydrofolate reductase. Each aspect of the project required careful evaluation of experimental data by curve fitting to the appropriate biophysical models. In studying the folding of a protein and its various mutants, I gained experience in site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant protein expression, and separation methods including chromatography and electrophoresis.
